The only similarity between the two shows is that the main character is white and his best friend is black. Seriously. that's the only thing. and the friendships aren't even similar in the least - JD and Shaun are so freakin different. And Turk & Gus... complete opposites.
It has a few small similarities. I definitely see how you would think that.
I love how everyone else just shot down your observation. They're all just like "no! not at all! What are you thinking? Are you on drugs? I'm so offended!" haha!
It's probably because the friendship of Shawn and Gus is similar to that of JD and Turk. Both guys, one black and the other white. They both have some witty banter going on as well. And Shawn and Gus's friendship is pretty tight, like Turk and JD.
Both shows solve cases. both have a black man and a white man who are best friends.
But Shawn and Gus have been friends since childhood.
Whilst Chris and Jonathan, have been friends since they were roommates at college.
Shawn has a Father, while Jonathan's father passed away.
The Biggest difference from the friendship is the roles are reversed in Psych,
Jonathan (maincharacter/white is a nerd While Chris (Sidekick/Black) is the stereotypical male
Gus (Sidekick/black) Is a Blerd, while Shawn (main Character/white is your Stereotypical male.
Dr. Cox vs. Lassie, also similar (constant agitator to our heroes)
i don't see the chemistry between Jules and shawn though, as much as J.D. and Elliot.
and instead of having a girlfriend for the brother since episode 1, Gus gets shafted constantly
both are good shows.
Scrubs is my favorite so it trumps psych but in all honesty the similarities are the reason i started watching Psych
The thing i see in common the most is the fact that both shows are the perfectly flawless in the way they mix hummor with drama and the black and
white close friendships Scrubs and Psych are tied for my fav show
MAIN CHARACTER (JD and Sean)
-Super goofy genius
-Cares a lot about hair
-Can be self-centered
-Really good at befriending people
-Has a habit of running mouth, and that getting him into trouble
-Very good at what they do
-Date several woman throughout series (Often use job to impress)
-Gets in trouble because of arrogance
-Attention seeking from lack of approving father figures
-Both have strange, absent father (by law for Psych)
-Live in odd places (Shawn’s laundromat, JD’s half-acre)
BEST FRIEND (Turk and Gus)
-Black
-Bald
-Often slightly exacerbated with protagonist
-Call each other similar nicknames (“Brown bear” (Scrubs), “Big sweet brown rock” (Psych))
-Very, very close friends (bromance)
-Sing together, dance together
-Grew up together, or have known each other for a long time
-Good at job that is different from protagonist, even though they work together. Turk isn’t doctor (he’s surgeon), and Gus is pharmaceutical salesman as well as working with Sean
-Doesn’t have many romantic relationships throughout (Turk because he’s with Carla, and Gus because he’s… Gus)
-Often compared to Michael Jackson (Turk often does the Michael jackson dance moves (ex. S2E6 around the 10 min mark) / Whole episode in which Gus is Michael Jackson, and numerous other references, including almost every time Gus does the victory dance)
DISAPPROVING HIGHER UP(Cox and Lassie)
-Always annoyed with protagonist
-Has a lot of experience
-Angry and lonely
-Very dismissive of protagonist
-God complex (always thinks they’re right and protagonist is wrong)
-Divorced wife, but still have relationship
-Despite hard shell, also has emotional side but never really shows it
-Protagonist is always trying to get them to open up
-Usually refers to/is referred to by protagonist using a demeaning nickname
-Around 45 years old
LOVE INTEREST (Elliot and Jules)
-On and off w/ protagonist throughout whole show
-Blond
-Smart
-Ends up with protagonist (and married)
-Has to work hard as female in mostly male profession, and prove that gender is not a factor
CHIEF (Kelso and Vick)
-“Of police” or “Of medicine”
-Both have hard exterior, but not entirely horrible people (Vick is nicer obv)
-Hard shell comes from having to make hard decisions
-Are sort of fired but then retire on their own
-Both are replaced by disapproving higher-up character eventually (Cox and Lassie)
COMIC MORGUE PERSON (Doug and Woody)
-Work with dead people
-Kooky
-Often seen randomly carrying around body bags
-Often says weird, very inappropriate things
-Bad interpersonal skills
-Awkward
-Not great at their job, even though its “easy”
-Lose dead bodies
-Sometimes play with bodies
-Make morbid jokes
OVERALL
-Both center around white and black best friends at a specific workplace
-Both often center around relationships and solving “cases” of some sort (aka diagnosing in Scrubs)
-Both have same number of seasons (discounting Scrubs 9, since it breaks pattern)
-There is a prominently figured small blue vehicle (Sasha and The Blueberry)
-Both heavily rely on flashbacks
-Both have a significant musical episode
-Both are comedies with very serious and powerful moments
-Both have loads and loads of silly pop culture references, particularly to nerdy fandoms or music
-Nicknames play a very prominent role in both (affectionate nicknames between the best friends and demeaning nicknames between the disapproving higher up)
-Both frequently reference a cappella or singing in harmony
