Portal 2 Question

Why does Portal 2 keep crashing!?

Whenever I play Portal 2 for PC, it works fine for a while, until I get to a part that involves cubes. I would pick it up, put it down, pick it up again, and the game crashes when I put it down. The same happens after I played it for a while, on the developer console, it says "Redownloading all lightmaps" so could anyone tell me how to fix this?

That's strange. Here are a couple of things you could try:

-Check the system requirements for the game and make sure your computer meets all of the minimum requirements. Portal 2 worked fine on my old computer until I reached the gels, and they were all invisible (even though I could interact with them - I just couldn't see them). Turned out my graphics card was slightly outdated. So you might just want to check everything on your computer is up-to-date enough to handle the game.

-Did you download the game (e.g. from Steam)? If so, something might have got corrupted and you might need to re-download it. If you did get it on Steam, you can just verify it (quicker than downloading the whole thing from scratch!). Sometimes even just defragmenting on Steam fixes a game. (If you didn't download the game (and installed it from CD) you could try reinstalling it. Maybe a file corrupted during the installation as a one-off.)

As the crashing seems to be connected with cubes, maybe one of the files that the cubes use to work properly has corrupted? That would be my guess.

Good luck! I hope these suggestions will be able to help you.

I have all the system requirements met, and it's not a bad graphics card. Everything looks good in the game, and it's not the "hl2.exe has stopped working" error either. and if I uninstall and re-install, will all my save data get removed? Because I was on chapter 6 or 7 when it started crashing, and I don't want to lose everything. And the cube files are not corrupted, because on the console I don't get a missing file error for a cube file. (I have the CD version.)

I don't think the saves would be deleted, but to be on the safe side you might want to back them up if you know where they are on your computer (I have it on Steam so I'm not sure exactly where the CD version saves them). When you uninstall, you might even get asked whether or not you want the save files removed.

Oh, never mind. I finally got this fixed! I think the perpetual testing initiative update got it fixed. Thanks anyway!
