How would you classify One Piece?

Personally, I consider it to be the best ongoing mainstream anime. OP is my second favorite anime.
I think most parts of it are well above average... some of the filler is a little boring, but its filler is still better than many other shounen I have seen.
Frankly, One Piece is awesome, in opinion.

I can thankfully say that I don't follow OP out of habit, as I do with Bleach and Naruto. As a series, OP has given me something to hope for as it moves along, getting more involved and intriguing with time rather than less. I've also seen significantly fewer galling questions in this particular anime.

But that's not much of an explanation, just really reasons I don't loathe the experience of reading/watching OP. Before I get into that, I will give some idea of where I would rank it.

In terms of ongoing series, it is currently my #1, with Attack on Titan nipping at its heels. There are better series overall in my opinion, but all of them are finished, which is probably part of the reason it's lower ranked (amazing endings are to be treasured). So I'd say OP is well above average.

I think what makes OP special is that it has truly evolved as a series. Its characters have endured a lot and changed as a result, some more substantially than others. The climb up the hill of power isn't quite so jarring as with similar anime, and it's not as controlled by emotion. The supernatural aspect is left just vague enough to keep us interested in how it works, and the world is so vast that we can't help but wonder what lies beyond the next stretch of water.

Is it the best of the genre? Not in my book. There are a few that still outstrip it, as Shonen is among my most commonly watched types of anime. It gets slightly closer to the top. Not by much.

I'm an avid fan of the manga, watching the anime only for the really interesting fight scenes and additions. It's not because I have a problem with the anime, it just takes a while to watch.

'Classify' is an interesting term to use. I can easily admit that it's my favorite shonen, as I can only respect a series that has gone on for so long without feeling like it's dragging itself out for no reason. Whether it's the adventure and mystery that can't be found in any other anime, the ridiculous character designs that make you chuckle at times, or the well thought out plot that makes you look at it more as an actual epic rather than just some fighting series, One Piece is definitely not like any other big shonen series. If someone were to insult Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail, or Toriko, I would immediately object simply because they very likely have a point. But lately, I've noticed that I get frustrated when a person just lumps One Piece in with the other shonen. It's not a matter of it being good or bad; it's simply on a level where it deserves to be set apart from the others.
