The Social Network (2010)

The Situation: Based on the founding of Facebook and the life of its young creator, Mark Zuckerberg, The Social Network begins in a random Boston bar. Socially awkward Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is on date with his long-time Boston University girlfriend Erica Albright (Rooney Mara). Lost in a deeply one-sided conversation, Mark manages to insult Erica's intelligence and values in what can only be described as a rapid-fire stream of consciousness. Erica gets more and more infuriated, realizing that, while Mark may be brilliant, he is not a nice guy. She immediately dumps him with brutal honesty.

Quote: "You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an ass. " - Erica Albright (Rooney Mara)

Why It Works: Erica's swift action and harsh words remind women everywhere that respect and kindness are not negotiable traits in a relationship.

----------------------------

Pretty Woman (1990)

The Situation: Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), a New York businessman, falls in love with Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a charming call girl he hires while doing business in Los Angeles. Eventually developing a deep affection for Vivian, Edward offers to buy her a condo to get her off the street. Visibly upset, Vivian says she can't accept his offer.

Quote: “Never in all the time ... that I had this dream did the knight say to me, 'Come on, baby, I'll put you up in a great condo.' – Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts)

Why It Works: Despite being a call girl, Vivian does not take Edward up on his offer to subsidize her life. She loves him and wants the whole package. Few movies display a streetwalker as a smart and independent as this.

--------------------------

Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001)

The Situation: After Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) enters a romantic relationship with her seedy boss Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), she finds herself deeply in love. Bliss is interrupted when Daniel not only cheats on her, but proposed marriage to another woman. The indignation of it all causes Bridget to deliver one of cinema’s most memorable resignation/breakup speeches.

Quote: “If staying here means working within ten yards of you, frankly, I'd rather have a job wiping Saddam Hussein's arse.” -- Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger)

Why It Works: The scene echoes many real-life office romances that have gone bad. Bridget embodies the clever, self-assured woman we all want to be in moments like these.

----------------------------

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

The Situation: Hopeless romantic Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls hard for Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), a girl who doesn’t believe in love. Even after warning Tom she wants to keep their relationship casual, he falls hard. Eventually falling out of lust with Tom, she breaks up with him. Instead of just saying, “its over” she references the very tragic ending of two important figures from the punk rock era.

Quote:
Summer: We've been like Sid and Nancy for months now.
Tom: Summer, Sid stabbed Nancy, seven times with a kitchen knife. I mean we have some disagreements but I hardly think I'm Sid Vicious.
Summer: No I'm Sid.
Tom: Oh, so I'm Nancy ...

Why It Works: In breaking up with Tom, Summer delivers harsh emasculation while also referencing the independent punk rock scene they both embrace. While she's clearly no hero, her speech remains one of the most creative breakups in cinema.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

The Situation: In an updated version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Bianca (Larisa Olyenik) must follow her father’s order that she not date until her sister Kat (Julia Stiles) starts dating. Through various antics, Kat finally goes out on a date, and Bianca begins seeing a self-centered high school lothario, Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), who had once romanced, then cruelly dumped, her sister years earlier. Over time, Bianca eventually sees Joey’s true slimeball colors and goes to the prom with another boy. Joey, incensed by this unexpected rejection, starts a fight with her date at the dance. Fortunately, Bianca does not need a knight in shining armor -- she can rescue herself.

Quote: (Bianca punches Joey in the face after he hits her escort). "That’s for making my date bleed!" (Punches him again.) "And that's for my sister!" (Knees him in the crotch.) "And that's for me!” -- Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik)

Why It Works: While physical violence is never the answer, Bianca lets us live vicariously through her assault on her sleazy suitor. Even better, she delivers each blow to Joey while wearing a pretty prom dress with pearls. Women on screen so often break up with their guys quietly, keeping themselves classy and feminine. In this scene, Bianca strongly goes against type to show us even the sweetest girls can be pushed over the edge.

When Harry Met Sally … (1989)

The Situation: After attempting to maintain a friendship without sex, Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) finally sleep together. Afterwards, Harry wants everything to return to normal; Sally sees the tryst as a turning point in their relationship. After running into each other at a wedding weeks later, Harry, hoping to salvage the friendship, jokes that they should view their tryst in dog years. When Sally asks who the dog is in his scenario, Harry implies it's her.

Quote: “I am the dog!? I... I don't see that, Harry. If anybody is the dog, you are the dog. You want to act like what happened didn't mean anything. … Because it does! And you should know that better than anybody because the minute that it happened you walked right out the door.” -- Sally Albright (Meg Ryan)

Why It Works: An intimate portrayal of two friends who become lovers, When Harry Met Sally… explores gender roles in our society. Sally does not simply let Harry continue their friendship after their carnal relations. She holds him to a higher standard.

----------------------------

Guys and Dolls (1955)

The Situation: Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) runs the hottest underground craps game in New York City. His constant gambling has gotten him in trouble with his fiancee Miss Adelaide (Vivian Blaine), who suspects that his dice game is more important to him than she is. After being engaged for 14 years, Adelaide has had enough of excuses.

Quote: [Singing] “You're at it again, you're running the game. I'm not gonna play second fiddle to that. I'm sick and I'm tired of starting a row and I'm telling you now that we're through.” -- Miss Adelaide (Vivian Blaine)

Why It Works: Breakups usually happen during deeply emotional conversations, or very loud fights. Here, the intensity of the music heightens the frustration that Adelaide makes us feel.

-----------------------

Fever Pitch (2005)

The Situation: Workaholic Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore) starts dating charming and relaxed Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon). Ben’s dedication to their relationship through the winter changes when spring -- and baseball season -- come around. It’s then Lindsey discovers Ben's all-consuming obsession with the Boston Red Sox. To prove his love, Ben skips a Sox game to attend an party with Lindsey. But the next morning, when he finds out he missed seeing his team pull off a stunning victory, he throws his sacrifice in her face, saying he had waited practically his whole life to witness such an event.

Quote: “Yeah. No, um, there isn't actually anything I've wanted for 18 years... because 18 years ago I was seven... and if I still wanted to marry Scott Baio, I would think that my life went terribly wrong. I -- I just thought tonight was so different. You broke my heart, Ben.” – Jennifer Meeks (Drew Barrymore)

Why It Works: Sports movies, specifically those of the romantic variety, tend to feature shallow girlfriends who just “don’t get it.” However, in this movie, Barrymore plays a smart and savvy businesswoman who has dreams and goals that go beyond her boyfriend -- and she demands the same respect and tolerance she gives him.

----------------------

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

The Situation: Stella (Kim Hunter) and Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) invite Stella’s sister Blanche (Vivian Leigh) to stay with them in New Orleans. Blanche’s presence causes friction between the couple. Stanley, an ape of a man, rapes Blanche, causing her to have a mental breakdown. While Stella cannot prove anything, deep down she knows Stanley somehow drove Blanche crazy. This gives Stella the strength to leave him.

Quote: “I'm not going back in there again, not this time, never going back, never.” -- Stella Kowalski (Kim Hunter)

Why It Works: While most people are familiar with Brando’s famous bellowing of "Stella!" in A Streetcar named Desire, few can recall the final act when he bellows for her again. The weak-willed Stella may have made the above speech to her baby while Stanley called from the other room, but the audience now that Stanley won't get his way this time.

-----------------------

Ray (2004)

The Situation: In the cinematic interpretation of legendary musician Ray Charles, no subject is taboo, even his out-of-wedlock relationship with his back up singer Margie Hendricks. Despite being the other woman, Margie believes Ray’s love for her is real and that he’ll leave his wife for her. When she reveals that she's pregnant with his child, she asks him to divorce his wife to marry her. Ray tells her he’ll never leave his family. Margie, despite being the other woman, sees Ray for who he really is and does what his wife can’t -- call him out about his selfish ways.

Quote: “Leave your family? You are a damn fool, you know that? Between the dope and the music and me, you already done left your damn family! You know what the sad part about it is, Ray? You don't even know it. You know what? From now on, it's strictly business between you and me." -- Margie Hendricks (Regina King)

Why It Works: Ray Charles reviewed a copy of the movie’s screenplay in Braille before he died. Even after seeing the negative light in which he is portrayed, Charles had the courage to accept the film’s judgment of the appalling way he treated his family and mistress.

--------------------------

The Break-Up (2006)

The Situation: Successful Chicago art dealer Brooke Meyers (Jennifer Aniston) breaks up with her boyfriend (Vince Vaughn) in the hope he will show more appreciation for her. In the process, the couple argue over their condo and each tries to drive the other out.

Quote: “I just don't know how we got here. Our entire relationship, I have gone above and beyond for you, for us... And I just don't feel like you appreciate any of it. I don't feel you appreciate me. All I want is to know, is for you to show me that you care.” – Brooke (Jennifer Aniston)

Why It Works: While a wonderful speech, the importance of the breakup in this movie comes from the reaction test audiences had to the ending. Many spectators were so upset over the couple parting that the studio altered the ending to make it more ambiguous.

-------------------------

Jerry Maguire (1996)

The Situation: While everyone remembers the classic lines “You complete me” and “You had me at hello,” few can recall Dorothy Boyd’s (Renee Zellweger) classy way of asking Jerry (Tom Cruise) for a divorce.

Quote: “Come on, Jerry. You know this isn't easy for me. I mean, on the surface, you'd almost think everything was fine. See, I've got this great guy who loves my kid -- and he sure does like me a lot. I can't live that way. It's not the way I'm built.” – Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger)

Why It Works: In a movie known for its catch phrases and big-name male lead, director Cameron Crowe pays close attention to the female characters and gives their relationships depth.

-------------------

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

The Situation: After a sex-ed class, 10-year-old Maya (Abigail Breslin) starts to question her father, Will (Ryan Reynolds), about his love life before his marriage to her mother. In a series of flashbacks, Will's past relationships are depicted one after the other, including one in which his college sweetheart, Emily (Elizabeth Banks), breaks up with him for the greater good.

The Quote: “I'm letting you go. Cause if we stay together, Will, we're gonna be miserable. I'm gonna hold you back from all these incredible dreams that you have. And then eventually you're totally gonna hate me for it.” -- Emily (Elizabeth Banks)

Why It Works: Instead of asking him to give up his dreams of pursuing a life in politics, Emily choses to set Will free. Dialogue like this actually feels real, and the scenario is utterly believable since smart and considerate couples confront mixed emotions every day.

------------------

The Blues Brothers (1980)

The Situation: Hoping to stage a fundraiser to save the Catholic orphanage where they both grew up, the Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) hit the streets of Chicago to round up the members of their old band. Along the way, they attempt to recruit a guitar player now working at a soul food restaurant with his wife (Aretha Franklin). She feels her husband should be part of a team running the restaurant, not running away with a band.

Quote: “You better think about what you're saying. You better think about the consequences of your actions.” -- Mrs. Murphy (Aretha Franklin)

Why it Works: Aretha’s ultimatum to her husband is followed by a rousing rendition of her monster hit, “Think.” Hailed as a feminist anthem when it was released in 1968, the song’s revival in The Blues Brothers introduced it to a whole new generation.

---------------------------

The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)

The Situation: Convinced that sex can ruin a perfectly good relationship, cerebral mathematician Gregory Larkin (Jeff Bridges) takes out a personal ad to find a woman with no sex appeal. Enter Rose Morgan (Barbara Streisand), a plain, plump English professor whom no one finds attractive. Problems arise when the two get married. Rose starts looking for intimacy. She begins exercising, dieting, and a sense of self-sufficiency soon follows. Rose decides to leave Gregory when she realizes he can’t give her what she wants and finds solace in the arms of an ex-lover, Alex (Pierce Brosnan), whom she still carries a flame for. But seeing Alex for the vain person who has already treated badly once, Rose in the end decides she’s fine on her own.

Quote: “I don't feel anything, isn't that great! I never thought about how I would feel, I only ever thought about you. I only wanted to make you happy. I never thought I was good enough for you... But Alex, you're not good enough for me!” – Rose Morgan (Barbra Streisand)

Why It Works: Streisand directs herself with much success. Through self-discipline, her character goes from ugly duckling to beautiful swan. Even better, though, is the confidence she finds along the way.

-------------------------

Born Yesterday (1950)

The Situation: Ex-showgirl Billie (Judy Holliday) travels to Washington, D.C., with her uncouth, but fabulously rich, lover Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford). Hoping to groom her for society, Harry hires handsome Paul Verrall (William Holden) to tutor his brassy mistress. During her lessons, Billie starts to believe in herself and sees she has more to offer than a pretty face. When Harry hits her, Billie finds the strength to walk out of her emotionally -- and now physically -- abusive relationship.

Quote: “When you hit me before it was like everything knocked itself together in my head, and it made sense. How some people are always givin' it and some takin'. And it's not fair. So I'm not going to take it anymore." -- Billie Dawn (Judy Holliday)

Why It Works: Realizing that an education, however belated, can open new doors for her, Billie discovers a sense of self-confidence she never had before: she no longer needs to rely on her looks. The lessons in the film connected with women in the 50s. Through Billie, they could see that a rich husband was not the key to enjoying a full life.

A real break up..it never breaks till you want
i learned all this from my cat Snow..Even when he was leaving home or dorm rooms. He never left me till I had to. And to never see him leaving as all we love do.With a young drummer at his 16 years catold and with a new little kitten friend living in a warm house forever till he comes back to me ..in a..white hair he left in an old sweater..or ..When he wants..Now is only when he and God wants. At the end for what I had to..comes to me as same as Snow. From heaven.
My husband getting to the house after a night out of home before a week being all nights at home. After 3 years being all nights out of home. Breakdown number 3,9907 and 20 years of know us..15 married..22 of sleep together..Not all years. Not always in the same room..or house.
--Honey..
Can’t you see that here’s nothing..Nothing!
You and me ..
We don’t have nothing!
I’m not hiding of you..I have my life
Get nearing his body heat to me..in an on and on come and go
And this doesn’t have to be that if I were a green old man chasing skirts or you a sexsaint or a prude
--Love..i really don’t care of what they say..
Or of you..Is..
Why are you doing to them..
Your lovers..never have molested me ..or hurt you..
Don’t you know that is not the same mentality a girl of 24 that a woman of 40..?
They’re just thinking in their future..
Silence behind his door dormroom..
5 steps behind that door with a knife in my hand (he’s got schizophrenia )
Raising my strong sweet voice..evil sweet
I can imagine the face you put when she left you ..After 3 years of being stand you
Sure the same you have now..
Now you go for the next fool..
What! (really angry almost to get out of his room)
--Nothing..
She just turned up her mattress and..shook it..
And Come On! The next one!
Oh..How I wish to be she..
I don’t want to be me..! I want to be she!..To have the youth..the job..the money..the car..To break with you!
--What are you waiting for..!
-- I said.. The youth..The job..The money! And the car
-- You don’t need it to leave ( he’s still in his locked room)
Then he sudden open his door just to say with all his anger and hate to me
I don’t care of you.. Of nothing of you! Damnreek.. ( looking at me showing me his teeth on his 2 meters tall) to crash the door after
--Now I won’t call you love..
Now i’ll call you Damnfunky!..i’m gonna be you and you gonna be me! (screaming out his door)
He opened his door.. looked my eyes with some sweet pity to go to his bath white sink to refresh his face ..leaving its door open then to go back his room closing it front my entire presence
--So you’re gonna work!
--No.. Not that
But now you’re gonna be me!
And here if you haven’t notice I’m the one who’s bored of you!
If she got bored of you in 3 years just imagine me in all these 20 years You bored to me ! (I lied)
After a day not seeing me .. being out of home buying hair extensions of all colors to let some in his shoes ..for the new one..or ones Buying a sold out movie Just to say fine after another of his outed nights..asking me how I was
--Oh Honey..and you look so tired..after a whole night working..i’m leaving to let you rest in your room ..more later i come back to use the computer..
--No.. But..You are fine here..
-- Bye..
Just please.. don’t erase any of my photo files..As you know..my lap is burnt of its battery wire
Are just kisses..of Hollywood scenes i painted to upload at my Flickr account..
--Honey..
Just
Take the chair..it bothers me..a bit..to walk here.
--Oh yes of course
Today.. In the same room after the same of last day..
--Helloo..
-- Hello..i’m just leaving..of the computer
-- No no..You are right here..you can stay..
-- No really I was just giving the last click when you arrived (True)
Turning my last look to him
But..You won’t go isn’t it..
Anymore..
To the movies
Of course i won’t be dressed up like this..i..it will be with other cloth..( holding my long old green wool sweater my dad brought me when I was 16 from Mexico..tie upped my neck with my blue scotch scarf a winter gift of me to him..now mine ..in my old sand corduroy pants stand upped in my men brown Oxfords.. while his lashes were looking at me with their dark bottom in his honey green eyes at half gaze from far
--Yes I know..But..I can’t go now..beautiful..But this Saturday
--Do you say the same to your other beautiful ones..

Silence While he was sitting on his big bed with his shirt open
You always do space to everything..(turning my eyes from his body half his face standing on his open door)
-- This Saturday..why not.. ( while he was putting out his shoes..his gray dress shirt all sweated in his back down and his hair changed from blond to black cause his sweat)
--i’ll go out
-- Alright just be careful
I stood about a half hour in my bed room trying to sleep and dream..
Going out his door was a while open..He was laying on his bed with his black pants and socks still on..Having that illusion of that he could be dead I left in enough silence he could notice me turning the gold house key after my steps going down the stairs.

The goodbye to my lover 2 months ago
--Are you going to come back
-- Yes
--That was all that I needed to know
