'Serenity' is the most recent, but I also loved 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and 'Forbidden Planet'. I'd pick any of these over the choices given so far. I think my winner would have to be 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', because I think it's held up very well over the years, and issues in are are just as relevant today.

I realize that the Fifth Element had Star wars in mind when it was made (which makes it a Homage and not 100% original) , but I still love it . They did a great job on it !
