Cammie I agree there are many words in the English language but when I'm really angry (ok even maybe just irate) there's only really one word that I use. Yes that awful, offensive, taboo, wicked, evil "f" word. And so what? Are some people so naive (or just bloody narrow-minded) as to think that automatically someone is a low-life or an outcast of society's because of one word? When I hear people whinge and preach about the use of that awful four-letter word and act self-righeous that's when I do really feel like telling them to get f-----!

Cammie Well, I've just used that horrible "f" word a few times right now - the net dropped out and i've had to reconnect to edit (or shall I say add)... I think most of you guys are missing the point why WritersMelody is so upset. It's not because the "f" word is used in the movies it's that by her own admission she herself does NOT swear. Therefore, swearing coming from anyone or anyplace would be offensive to this lady. Honestly, I find it very hard to understand how anyone can say they never swear. Use other words? What other words? If I'm filthy mad or frustrated, I really don't think that saying something like "sugar!" or "walk off!" is going to cut it. Not for me anyway.

marissa Swearing in movies really doesn't bother me in the least. You've all made good points, and I get that some people might deem it unecessary, but I don't think we should put this kind of cap on art. If a filmmaker wants his character to say the "f-word", who are we to say they can't? It's not like I'm saying Disney movies should curse or anything. But... so long as it's rated accordingly, I don't see the problem. And I understand that it's offensive, but so do the directors, actors, writers, etc., etc. That's what they meant it to be, right? If it takes awat for one's movie-going expirence, then maybe one just doesn't see it the same way the writer saw it. Which is fine, I mean, we're all entitled to our opinions. But can we really critize someone for having a different view? Anyhow, I just think we shouldn't put restictions on art. We can't tell someone "you shouldn't use this word in your movie. It's rude and might offend someone." I mean, the people who have been told these sorts of things in the past have gone on to to groud-breaking things! It's art. The end. :)

tessajanuary I just think that the whole concept of "taboo" words is a very interesting, but strange one. I heard a story on NPR a long time ago that said that archeologists had found that all civilizations have had words that were off-limits. But my question is [i]why[/i]? It's just a word after all! What gave it this special power? Why is a word taboo? It just seems like a very odd concept to me...

mastachen It's not the writer or actor that's swearing, it's the character. You say that it's ok to establish character through swearing, but it should be done in moderation. That makes no sense at all. If we're trying to establish that a certain character likes to drop the f-bomb every 5 seconds, then the writer should make that character that character swear every 5 seconds. How is the audience going to get a sense of the character when we can't see what the character is really like?

giggirock I've actually met people that drop the f bomb every 5 seconds. I think having words you won't say is just silly. Life is full of expletives. There's been movies I thought could have used more expletives to make it more realistic.

snake68 I personally have seen hundreds of movies and almost every movie has swear words in them. I think what you mean is that you don't like how it affects young people and movies may create a sense that it is cool. Remember they are just words and it is your desison to get affended by them or not. I don't swear even though I hear bad words being spoken everday and to me, a movie fanatic I think it gives personality and humor to the character.

duckey94 Ai ya, people! It's just a bunch of words! People say them to express their feelings. It's better to say, "Aw, damn!" when you screw something up than to punch the nearest person, isn't it? If you don't want to hear swearing, I really don't know what to tell you. People swear everywhere, sometimes for no good reason, so it makes sense that it would be in movies and on television. They want the shows and movies to seem as realistic as possible in most cases.

alismouha I'm of course against swearing and I don't like it,but I gotta admit that half of what made Scarface the best gangster movie of all time (in my opinion) is Tony's Cuban-American Swearing.

Frizzhead in reality some people they swear for every second sentence it makes it more realistic. for example in bruges is one of the best films ever and they swear every 1.18 minutes (fact)
