Lady GaGa for President!
Lady GaGa for President!
Not only are sisters doing it for themselves, but lately in pop music, they’re pushing the boys off to the side. While once-hot male stars like Usher, Chris Brown and 50 Cent struggle to inch into the Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift swing, hit and score with single after single.

In song, they don’t even need the comfort of a man anymore. Lady Gaga flaunts her bisexuality in her signature hit “Poker Face,” a woman makes a confession (I love you!) to Rihanna on the dance floor in the Rated R track “Te Amo,” and in one of the biggest singles of the last two years, Katy Perry kisses a girl — and she likes it. Where’s Justin Timberlake when you need him?

Album sales are on the girls’ side, too. The two best-selling long players of 2009 were both by women: Taylor Swift’s Fearless came out on top, with 3.2 million units sold, while Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream moved 3.1 million in the final weeks of the decade to become the year’s second-biggest seller.

But it was the Boyle album that emerged as the Avatar of music at the end of 2009. For several weeks there, the tops of the pops on the Billboard 200 album chart felt like the summer box office, only instead of being dominated by testosterone-fueled blockbusters, the headliners were all packing estrogen. The only two serious threats to Boyle’s chart supremacy, Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige, also outsold every guy in sight.

In the end, Boyle was knocked off her perch last week by — you guessed it — a woman, a newcomer who goes by the name Ke$ha. The boys may be back on top this week, as Vampire Weekend ascends to No. 1 with their second album, Contra, but they’d better enjoy it while it lasts. Boyle’s January 19 sit-down interview with the queen of all power women, Oprah Winfrey, all but guarantees her a quick return trip to the top.

Meanwhile, the most eagerly anticipated album of the new decade? Soldier of Love, a 10-years-in-the-making opus by a very famous lady: Sade. The warrior reference is fitting. Though male-dominated Oscar-season war films like The Hurt Locker, The Messenger and Brothers paint a different picture, in music, the girls are just as fighting fit as the guys.

In the video for her current Top 10 single, “Hard,” Rihanna wields a machine gun, runs around in haute battle couture, catwalks across an exploding desert, and proclaims herself “the hottest bitch in heels right here.” Lady Gaga already offed her lover with a dose of poison in her “Paparazzi” clip, and everyone who saw her MTV Video Music Awards performance last September knows she’s not afraid to get a little bloody. Now we’ve got Sade, pop’s empress of cool, ready to don her fatigues and fight — for love and continued chart dominance in pop’s battle of the sexes.

May the best women win.

Hey there sugar baby
Saw you twice at the pop show
You taste just like glitter mixed with rock and roll
I like you a lot lot
Think you're really hot hot

I know you think you're special
When we dance real crazy
Glam-aphonic, electronic, disco baby
I like you a lot lot
All we want is hot hot

[Chorus:]
Boys boys boys
We like boys in cars
Boys boys boys
Buy us drinks in bars
Boys boys boys
With hairspray and denim
Boys boys boys
We love them!

Oh, oh

Baby is a bad boy
With some retro sneakers
Let's go see The Killers
And make out in the bleachers
I like you a lot lot
Think you're really hot hot
Let's go to the party

Nowhere
Yeah we're going nowhere fast
Maybe this time, ill be yours you'll be mine
c-c-c-crazy, get your ass in my bed
Baby you'll be, just my summer boyfriend
Summer boy

Lets get lost you can take me home
Somewhere nice we can be alone
Bikini tops, coming o-o-off
Don't be sad when the sun goes down
You'll wake up and im not around
Ive got to go oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
We'll still have the summer after all

Sometimes, you might start a fight
But Im happy pretending we're alright (alright)
Sun glasses, cover up my green eyes
My martini glistens, yeah
While checking out other guys
Summer boy

Lets get lost you...

it's funny how things, they change
the clouds they part, rearrange for me
faces of strangers and I have no familiars to help me see
where is home, I want you to know

that I wish you were here
I wish you were here

sometimes I wonder if god hides out in cities to set us free
'cause yeah, this room is crowded
but I am so alone in it, help me please
where is home, I want you to know

that I wish you were here
I wish you were here (2x)

and I will be strong, I won't give in
I won't deny you, I know where we've been
I'm so much more than all of my fears
than all of these tears, my tears yeah

I wish you were here (2x)
where is home
I want you to know
oh, yeah

that I wish you were here
I wish you were here (2x)

hello everybody
get a ride to the west side
kiss the girl with her tongue tied
hello everybody
we'll get out 'cause you don't care
shut down like software
hello everybody
take a sip for the hip-hop
fuel up at the rest stop

we're just physical creatures of the underworld
she is the queen of the faux disco scene

retro dance freak (retro retro dance)
singin' retro dance beats (retro retro freak)
retro dance freak (hu-hu-huh)
undercover, the girl needs her lover

what's up everybody
take a ride on an airplane
take a bath in champagne
whats up everybody
watch the girls all curtsy
for the paparazzi
let's go everybody...
