‘Fifty Shades of Grey’: Jamie Dornan Sticking with the Franchise
proved to be just as big a phenomenon at the box office as it was on the bestseller list (read our review). Of course, given its worldwide take of $400 million (and counting), it’s a no-brainer for Universal to start moving on film adaptations for the rest of the E.L. James’ book trilogy.
However, it looks like fans expecting an announcement about the status of
sooner rather than later may have to temper their anticipation. We’ve already heard that James is angling for more creative control of the franchise going forward, but at least one crucial part of the first film appears to be on board whenever the sequels do happen.
, star Jamie Dornan – who plays the enigmatic Christian Grey in the
trilogy – has not left the film series, despite some reports claiming the actor had exited the role in future films due to his wife’s complaints about the subject matter. A rep for Dornan reportedly said that such claims were the result of “
We had recently heard that the studio was (naturally) interested in continuing the film series, and it’s a little hard to believe that Dornan wouldn’t have already been asked to sign up for the sequels as part of his initial contract. After all, Charlie Hunnam backed away from the role that ultimately went to Dornan, citing his busy schedule. It’s quite likely that the commitment of an entire trilogy of films was part of the reason for his hesitation to join the project.
More likely, Dornan and co-star Dakota Johnson already have their deals squared away for the next two films, and it’s simply a matter of locking down the creative team behind the camera before pre-production ramps up for the second film. In any case, Universal has a major moneymaker on their hands, and moviegoers are all but guaranteed to see more of Christian Grey in the near future.
Are you glad that Dornan is apparently sticking with the
franchise, or were you hoping to see another actor try his hand at the role? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Christopher Walken should be cast in the roll. Only he can save the day.
Well if he leaves they can just throw a ton of money at Henry cavill. Seeing as the two are twins no one should notice
Keep dreamin’ cause no amount of money is gonna make Cavill come on board this PoS franchise. He already has 2 other franchises in tow, and WB can throw even more money to make sure it never happens.
man i wanted Jamie to leave….I really don’t find him fitting for the role
Although I wasn’t thrilled with Jamie playing Christian Grey, now that I have seen the movie (and liked it in spite of the conflicting reviews), I would prefer consistency in the actors moving forward. I’m looking forward to the last 2 movies as the story line became more interesting after book 1.
Sooo agree, I thought Jamie could not pull the essence of Chrstian off. After seeing the movie ….Jamie = Christian. Two and three should be exciting with all the situations they have to deal with.
I wouldn’t go see the 2nd and third films if Jamie Dornan wasn’t in them. It would ruin the films – he was a main character – change someone else ok maybe – but not the main characters
Looking forward to the next 2 films – sooner than later would be good
I completely agree. Leave the Jamie & Dakotah intact. I am looking so forward to the next two films. I can’t wait. However, if either of these people are replaced, I won’t see the films.
I hope Jamie and Dakota stay. I like their connection and think the next movie Fifty Shades Darker) they will be more comfortable with each other which will make it steamyer. Although he needs to smile less. Christian was not big on smiling. Always intense.
Definitely yes. Jamie and Dakota did a fantastic job playing their parts. Sam Taylor-Johnson handled scenes with grace for subject matter. EL James should allow Universal to handle screenwriting (which could have been better – not the fault of actors or director). Just get it together so sequels are better written and produced so they come out timely. Fan base id definitely waiting with baited breath!
Having a new actor would be weird. They’re ok together, i think they’re cute. I’ll watch any sequel of this movie.
i really hope Jamie and Dakota both for forward and do the sequels. i loved the movie…even though i thought they rushed it so much but overall great performance and i cant wait to see the next one.
Wife: “Honey, I don’t think you should be doing this movie series anymore. The subject matter is bad.”
Then he shows how much they will pay him.
Wife: “Never mind, I think you should do it.”
Yes!! I don’t want him to leave. Love him as Christian Grey.
I liked Jamie Dornan in the role. Charlie Hunnam is handsome enough and doesn’t have the “right” hair either. I hope they do make the other 2. It was very entertaining which is more than can be said for films like “Hot Tub Time Machine” which hasn’t had as much panning as 50 Shades. It fulfilled all my expectations – I was entertained, it made me eager for the next installments and I found both actors believable in the roles. Dakota Johnson is so cute and disingenuous as Ana.
oops! Meant to type Charlie Hunnam ISN’T handsome enough.
I can’t wait for the next one to come out. I’m in a Mystic Mardi Gras Society and we had 270 ladies go last weekend to see it…. we are all on stand by for the next one. WHOO HOOO!!!!
I think Jamie did an “Awesome” job playing Christian Grey. I would be weird if he didn’t play him in the rest of the series. I Love the books and I thought the movie was amazing. I really loved it. I can’t wait for the other one’s to come out
Jaimie Dornan nailed role as Christian Grey and look forward to seeing him in many more roles. Hollywood look out!!!!
I went in with an open mind. Personally Dornan did not do it for me.
It is nonsense that his wife thinks the role is too sexy…she married and underwear model so there is no way she can possibly complain about this film. He is a fantastic actor and I hope that Dakota grows a little more depth before films 2&3.
There was never any doubt in my mind the Jamie would return for the sequels. I think he did an awesome job in portraying Christian Grey, I loved the movie, can’t wait for the next installment.
Jamie did okay I guess my only problem would be he didn’t have that dominant look that I was looking for. As for a replacement then I would say Alexander Skarsgård. Any true blood star would say he could pull it off really good.
It would ruin the whole sequel if Jaime Dornan left… I loved it with him and dakota and cant wait for the other 2 movies only wished they where back to back not so delayed..
