Thank you for the reviews! This part is a little darker, but who knows it might just bring them closer...
After Susan left mister Hamley walked over to Hugh. ‘Excuse me for being so bold, but I thought you could use this.’, he said as he put a glass of scotch in front of Hugh. Hugh nodded and gave the man a polite smile, ‘Thank you.’ Just as Mr. Hamley was about to walk away Hugh spoke up, ‘I-I don’t know if you have any time, but… would you...’, he gestured to the seat opposite of him. ‘Sit with you?’, Hugh nodded. ‘Of course Mr. Laurie… I’m sorry Miss Susan left.’ ‘Yeah... it was my fault, I suppose I’m just not good at dating… I keep asking myself what I was thinking going on these dates. First with Mindy, which I owe you an apology for by the way and now this thing with Susan… I just wish it would be easier.’ ‘I guess we all want that Mr. Laurie, but you shouldn’t give up, I like to think everything happens for a reason, so maybe the reason these dates didn’t work out is because your heart ultimately belongs to someone else…’, Mr. Hamley said and got back up again as he had more clients to serve. Hugh gave him a polite smile as he thought about Mr. Hamley’s words, it was true, his heart did belong to someone else… someone he didn’t think he would ever deserve.
Hugh kept sitting at the restaurant thinking about his failed marriage, his failed dates, the New Year’s party in London and of course about Lisa… Mr. Hamley sometimes passed his table asking if he was okay or if he wanted something else to eat or drink. Hugh ordered two more scotches, but when he was about to ask for the third refill Mr. Hamley interrupted him. ‘Mr. Laurie I really have to apologize for my boldness tonight, but don’t you think that it may be a good idea if I called someone to pick you up?’ ‘I-I…’, Hugh stumbled then sighed and handed Mr. Hamley his cell phone, who looked to see who was the first person on speed-dial. ‘Hey Hugh, how did your date go?’, it was the first thing Mr. Hamley heard as he called the number. ‘Good evening Miss, I’m sorry interrupt your evening, I’m Matthew Hamley, the owner of the restaurant Mr. Laurie chose to dine at tonight.’ ‘O… Is something wrong? Is he okay?’ ‘He isn’t injured physically, but he is a little sad and he had a few scotches so I would like to ask you if there is a possibility that you could pick him up?’ ‘O-of course… I’ll be right there.’ ‘That would be great Miss….’ ‘Lisa, Lisa Edelstein.’ ‘I guess I will see you in a little while then Miss Edelstein, I’m sorry for the inconvenience.’ ‘That’s okay, I’ll be there in 15.’
Lisa had immediately called a cab and got to the restaurant in about 15 minutes. When she walked in Mr. Hamley was already waiting for her and pointed to the corner Hugh was currently sulking in. ‘Hey…’, she sat down next to him. He looked up at her and deep into her beautiful concerned eyes, ‘Liz…’, he softly breathed. ‘Hmmm, are you okay?’, she grab his hand with one of hers and his face with the other. As she brushed his cheek he leaned into it and briefly closed his eyes then nodded, ‘Another crappy date…’ ‘After which you decided it was time to drown yourself in scotch and misery again.’ Hugh blushed as guilt had taken over his body once again, he didn’t want to be seen like this… the least by her. ‘Come on… let’s get you home.’, she said and helped him get up. He then started to search his pockets and handed her his credit card as he hadn’t paid yet. After paying Lisa took him by the arm and led him outside to his car. She didn’t even have to ask for the keys as he just handed them to her. When they were both seated in the car Lisa grab his hand again as he turned to look at her, ‘Don’t let yourself drown in misery Hugh, it will all be okay again...’ ‘How can it be okay again, Liz? I don’t know how anymore, I’ve never been happy for a long time as you know, but I always thought that someday maybe... you know. And I always thought that when I met a woman that was nice and funny and smart and maybe even beautiful and I had the nerve to ask her out that then maybe… But I screwed up Liz, she was bored out of her mind going on a date with me, while I made one mistake after another, I really can’t blame her for running away from me…’ ‘O Hugh…’, Lisa sighed. ‘I’m just too old for this, what was I thinking… there’s no woman in the world that would…’ ‘Hugh stop it…’, Lisa interrupted him, ‘There are millions of woman who would love to date you, you are amazing, brilliant, funny, sexy, incredibly nice guy and if some woman doesn’t see that, well then she isn’t worth it.’ Hugh looked into her blue-grey eyes and slowly felt warmth returning to his body, as he gave her a weak smile and she started to drive them home.
‘My house shrunk.’, Hugh said as he got out of the car. Lisa smiled as she walked to her front door, ‘Yeah and it walked over to another neighborhood too.’ ‘Well isn’t that weird.’, Hugh smirked and Lisa was happy to see he was making jokes again. ‘So ehm…’, Hugh gestured at the house. ‘There’s no way I’m letting you sulk in that big house of yours all by yourself tonight, you’re staying with me.’, Lisa closed the door behind them. ‘Well I guess that’s clear then.’, he smiled as they walked into the living room. Lisa turned on the TV and got two glasses of juice after which she tried to make some light conversation about the show that was currently on. She could see Hugh was feeling better and better as the show continued. When it was over they both yawned at the same time then laughed, ‘It’s been a long day.’ ‘Yeah… we better get to bed.’ ‘Hmmm’, Lisa said and they walked to their respective rooms together. Just before Hugh entered his room he turned to face her. ‘Thank you…’, he said and moved a little closer to Lisa. ‘Always…’, she said and he nodded as they hugged. ‘You know I’m gonna miss you tomorrow night when I’m all by myself again…’ ‘Mmm me too, 3th night in a row already…’ Hugh nodded in the crook of her neck and smelled her hair letting the smell intoxicate him. ‘I don’t know what I would do without you Liz, I mean it…’, he said letting go of her a little so he could look into her eyes who curiously stared up at him. Both wanted nothing more than to kiss the other, but still felt their conscience restrict them from doing so. After a little while of just staring at each other Hugh leaned in and brushed his lips so softly against hers that both of them were unsure if that really happened, then he placed a soft kiss just at the side of her mouth and they both closed their eyes before telling each other goodnight.
When Lisa woke up on Sunday morning it was already 10am, she couldn’t remember the last time she had slept in but it felt kind of nice. She smiled as she stepped out of bed and walked to the kitchen. When she was halfway she suddenly heard a deep voice sing and when she came closer she could also smell pancakes. ‘Hey sleepyhead’, Hugh smiled brightly at Lisa as he was making breakfast. He couldn’t help but notice how cute she looked in her oversized pyjamas and the messy hair. ‘Good morning’, she said happily and sat down at the kitchen table. ‘So Miss Lisa, what would you like for breakfast? I have your usual yoghurt and fruit, but because it’s Sunday I also made some pancakes with that delicious strawberry syrup you love so much and a few pancakes with little chocolate pieces.’ Lisa smiled as he put a plate in front of her, ‘What did I do to earn this surprise breakfast?’ ‘Just being you.’, Hugh said and blushed a little, ‘Plus I thought it was the least I could do for you with everything you did for me.’ Lisa just smiled and started to eat her breakfast which she found utterly delicious as she even let out these same small moans that had driven Hugh crazy just a few days ago.
‘You know, I was thinking… maybe we should have some sort of dinner party tonight.’ ‘A dinner party?’, Hugh asked not really knowing what to think about it. ‘Yeah… nothing really special, I was thinking we’d just invite some friends and have some fun…’ Hugh smiled, he knew she was still trying to cheer him up even though he didn’t show his misery anymore. ‘Sounds good… who shall we invite?’ ‘Well… I was thinking maybe just Robert and his wife and ehm… maybe Jesse, Jennifer and Omar and his wife…’ ‘Sure, you mind if I invite Stephen too? ‘Cause I think he’ll kill me when he finds out I have a party while he’s in town and I didn’t invite him…’ ‘Well of course you can invite him…’ ‘Hmm, let’s make some calls then.’
