My favorite episode in season two was "Who's Your Daddy." It hit me with a whole new story line, House and Cuddy. I was mesmerized by the fact that they were growing closer and was drawn to the lure of the possibilities. Later in the episode, Cuddy enters House's office to tell him something, but once she gets there, she loses all nerve and merely thanks him for the injections he had assisted her with. This is a twist on that episode. I can only hope it's to your liking.

The day was over, and darkness began to swallow the sky. House, as always, spent his hours after work resting on his well-worn leather sofa and watched the flashing screen of the television as his mind painted ellaborate spirals around the day's puzzles. All at once, the stars seemed to have their way with him as they sang sweet lullabies to the exhaustion withing his eyes, but just as his mind was teetering on the portal of dreams, he remembered when Cuddy came to his office. He knew she had something to tell him, but it wasn't what she had to say that left him so distraut; it was why she decided not to say it.

Within a matter of seconds, his leg was siezed with a mind numbing pain, and his thoughts were momentarily hindered. Clawing for his Vicadin, he managed to shovel in a few more pills to once again offer clarity to his perceptions.

He sat erect on the couch while the pain subsided and cradled his head within his hands in confusion. What was she going to say?! The more he thought about it, the more his stomach writhed itself into hardened knots. The effects of the Vicadin were wearing thin, his pain was still there and, at length, was growing worse with every stroke of the clock. His sat in agony, not only of body but also of mind, battling within himself for a way to rectify the situation, but when the pain was too much to contain, he found himself embracing his last resort--addressing Cuddy.

Cane in hand, he grabbed his jacket and hobbled to the door. While reaching for the knob, he paused in a moment of doubt. Taking several breaths, he found the will to continue on what seemed to be an inescapable, emotional journey.

The subtle glow of the moon and the shadows of the swaying trees waved over her front door. The windows were smothered in black and no light could be seen. She was asleep. He made his way closer, and while still doubting himself, knocked heavily upon her door. His breath bellowed in clouds of white into the piercing nature of the night air. He waited. Silence screamed on the voice of the wind.

The door opened. She squinted to see the shadowed figure standing on her threshold. Wrapping herself tightly in her bathroab, she looked up. House's eyes met hers and both were lost in a momentary trance.
"Can I come in?" he said to her while never breaking eye contact.
"Yeah." she said, almost in a sigh, thinking it was another medical ploy on the part of House. "Why are you here? There weren't any other tired women you could accost in the middle of the night?"
"All the women I know are well-accustomed to working at night, but I figured you would be cheaper." he said while making his way to a chair in her living room.
"So really, why are you here? I can only assume there is some ridiculous medical notion you want to run by me before totally disregarding whether I say yes or no."
"Nonesense, I always take into consideration what you have to say...and then I do the opposite."
She looked at him with great impatience.
"Either tell me what you came here to tell me or get out of my house."
"Oh you wouldn't kick me out. I'm a cripple, remember?"
She paused, waiting to see if he had anything to say that was worth hearing, but he just sat there in silence. Releasing a sigh, she turned away and began turning off all the lights and heading back to bed, but upon seeing this he knew he couldn't stall any longer.
"Why did you do it?" he said in a muffled voice.
"Why did I do what?"
"Why did you come into my office to tell me something and then change your mind once you got there?"
"That's what this is about?"
He sat still, waiting for her to answer his question.
"House, go home. You're analyzing this way too much."
"I'll go home as soon as you agree to tell me why you changed your mind."
"Just let it go." she said with a soft smile.
He stood up while frustration was rooting itself deep within him.
"I can't let it go! Don't you get it? I need to know!"
"Why, House? Why do you need to know?"
"So I can have something to chat with Foreman about during the differentails."
"Damn it, House! You came all the way over here. Be serious for once in your life! Why do you NEED to know?"
He paused; his heart pulsing like a stallion at full gallop. Beads of sweat began to swell within his palms.
"Beacuse..." he paused again while staring at the floor. "Beacuse I need to know if it was because of me."
"No."
"No? That's all you have to say?"
"House, I want a child. You know that more than anyone, and its an emotional topic for me. It makes me say and do things I would never normally do. It seems like no matter how hard I try, I'm destined to never be a mother."
"You're changing the subject."
"I'm not! I just don't know what do anymore."
"Is that why you came to my office?"
"I came to your office...in fear and confusion, and I just wasn't being mnyself."
"Is that all?"
Tears began to cradle the sorrow in her bloodshot eyes. She put her face in her hands and began to tremble in stress of the moment. House looked at her with eyes of stone.
"Tell me what you were going to say!"
"House, I'm so scared. I don't know where to go. All I want is a child...and there's no one who can make that happen."
"ME!" he shouted. She stopped crying and looked at him in a confused paralysis. He turned away from her and began to pace to and fro.
"You?"
"Did it ever occur to you that I would have liked to at least have been considered? You gave everyone an opportunity. You even gave Wilson a chance, and we both know he's no more than a child himself. You asked everyone but me."
"I..." she started, but he cut her off before she could finish.
"You didn't even offer me the benefit of the doubt! You didn't even give me a chance."
"House..." she paused and began to cry all over again. She continued, "You were my first choice."
He sat stunned in amazement.
"You're lying."
"Why would I lie about that?"
He sat still, scanning her every move looking for a reasonn to believe her.
"I don't know."
She stood up and walked over to him. He could feel his heart punding louder and louder. His nerves were wound so tightly that he had to check to see if his breath still flowed. She sat next to him. He could feel the warm caress of her fingers on the hallow of his hand. He bagan to tremble while looking deep into her eyes.
"Let me be the one." he whispered.
She looked up at him, tears still flowing, and leaning forward, pressed her lips to his. He wrapped his arms around her and held her ever so soflty in the gentle flicker of the fireplace.
