Horror Movies Question

I need some suggestions on horror movies, please.

I am looking to find some really good horror movies to watch this Halloween. I prefer ones that actually build up the characters before picking them off so you actually feel something when they do die. I like supernatural, slasher, and demonic possession movies the best.

Please suggest little known films that haven't really had a big impact. I've seen a lot of movies so more than likely if it is more mainstream there is a very good chance I've seen it.

Thank you for your time and suggestions in advance.

I want to thank everyone who participated in this question. Even those that I've seen that you listed were spot out in the fact that they were perfect in my taste. So once again, a great big THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let Me In is one I've heard many a great things about. I think I'll have to finally break down and watch it. As for The Walking Dead, funny you should mention that as I am watching it on DVD right now to prep for season two tomorrow.

How about these:
Evil Dead
Scream 1-4
Prom Night (1980 Version)
The Strangers
Harper's Island (It's techically a 13 episode miniseries, but it's still worth a watch)
The Underworld Series
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Both, in my opinion, are really good movies. The Ruins kind of creeped me out when I saw it.

Me too)) But I like it... One more "Shutter" and "The Haunting in Connecticut" - not bad, I think.

Supernatural:
The Haunting (1963) <---- Okay, so it's not little known, but whatever. It's too great and scary not to be included.
House on Haunted Hill (1959) <--- Good, scary fun. You can't go wrong with Vincent Price!
Carnival of Souls (1962)
Cat People (1942)
Freaks (1932) <---- GOOBLE GOBBLE, GOOBLE GOBBLE, WE ACCEPT HER, ONE OF US!
Island of Lost Souls (1932)
Dead of Night (1945) <---- The first horror anthology movie ever made. A couple stories were later adapted into classic episodes of The Twilight Zone.
Vampyr (1932)

Slasher:
Psycho (1960) <--- Again, it's far from little known, but it was the first slasher movie ever made, so it merits inclusion. Not to mention it is brilliant.
Peeping Tom (1960)

Demonic possession... hmmm... I haven't seen too many demonic possession movies, but I'll give it a shot:
The Innocents (1961) <--- Technically, it's possession by sadistic ghosts, but close enough.

Random:
The Night of the Hunter (1955) <--- Robert Mitchum in one of his most famous roles, that of psychopathic serial killer (and preacher) Reverend Harry Powell.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) <--- One of the first horror films ever made, and still one of the best.

Great list here. I especially love the fact that you've named a lot of old movies. House on Haunted Hill and Psycho are great films the others I have yet to see so I will definitely be checking them out.

All good films. I think this is one of the first Halloweens that I've only gotten around to watching the animated Sleepy Hollow and not the live action one. Oh well, nothing says Thanksgiving like the headless horseman.
