Harry Potter Question

5 Points to your house at Hogwarts if you could answer any of these questions

Question:1

1. Why didn't James Potter make himself Secret
Keeper?
So we all know that the major storyline of Harry Potter
involved Wormtail betraying James and Lily Potter when
they make him Secret Keeper to their home. Voldemort
then comes along and kills them and tries to blast
Harry to smithereens.
The question is, why did James need to make anyone
else Secret Keeper at all? Personally we'd have gone
with Dumbledore anyway but seeing as Dumbles was
also the Secret Keeper for Grimmauld Place in Order of
the Phoenix, surely James could have just been the one
for his own family?

Well, I'll make a hypothesis. Not sure if it is right.

The secret was about the location the Potters were hidden.
The Secret Keeper is the only one who can reveal the secret.
So, if he had the possibility to tell Voldemort where he is, then he won't be anymore invisible to him.

Dumbledore is a different case. He was Secret Keeper of where the Order gather, not about himself. I guess you can't be Secret Keeper of your own self.

When I first read Prisoner of Azkaban, I assumed that a person couldn't be his or her own Secret Keeper. It had to be someone from outside the secret, i.e. neither James nor Lily could have been Secret Keeper.

However, in Deathly Hallows, its stated that Bill becomes Secret Keeper for Shell Cottage/himself and Fleur, while Arthur becomes Secret Keeper for The Burrow/the rest of the family.

My guess now is that either this is a mistake, or the ability to be your own Secret Keeper had to be something discovered since the first war.

Or perhaps the nature of the secrets was different. I mean, Arthur and Bill most likely were Secret Keepers of their families' household. Because Deatheaters couldn't find the Burrow, yet Ron was visible to them when he departed with Harry and Hermione. On the other hand, the Potter secret must have been about themselves. So if James was walking in front of Voldemort, the latter wouldn't be able to see him.

I'd have thought the Weasleys would want protecting all the time though. Maybe Ron wasn't included in the Fidelius Charm because he'd need to be at home when it was cast. Also, Ron was IDed before the Weasleys were put under the charm - in fact his identification was the reason they needed to be hid.
