Isn't it stupid to compare Twilight to Harry Potter then? Isn't it stupid to compare JK Rowling with Stephenie Meyer, then? (Since it's practically an insult to Joanne by comparing her with Meyer). No, it's a part of the human nature to compare things, judge things, etc. Humans have the gift of intelligence, and they use it to think. That's why we get all these comparing and contrasting.

Harry Potter Vs. Twilight  best answer

it's never stupid to compare anyone to anyone else.

Comparing Bella's ability to perform magic to Hermione's ability to perform magic won't make a person look very smart, but it's up to them. As long as a person is honestly thinking about the words they are projecting, they should be successful at comparing the two.

Bella had lots of voice and opinions. If she didn't they would have gotten married as soon as Edward first proposed. She would have stopped talking to Jacob. She would have gone to college right after high school. During the newborn battle, Bella would have waited silently on the sidelines while Edward fought in the battle. Alice would have never "kidnapped" Bella. Bella would have never skipped school to go see Jacob. They would have never had a baby. All those outcomes were result of Bella doing the opposite of what Edward wanted.

@ alexisn: “Hermione was angry and at least her angst only lasted for a week unlike Bella's whose lasted for several months” - It was longer than a week and she had much less to be depressed about. She had the ability to see Ron again if she really wanted (send him a patronus to send him a message or to find out where he was and aparate there). Ron did not break up with her. The choice to separate from Ron was also hers. Bella had no such options. She had no control on the situation as the break up was totally against her will and as far as she was concerned it was for ever. She had no way of contacting Edward or of meeting him. “She was sad because she never got the chance to express her feelings to him” - she had years and years to tell him. “She didn't know Edward for as long as Ron knew Hermione.” - knowing someone for longer does not mean you'll have more intense feelings for them. I have had longer relationships than my current one and known people longet than my boyfriend but I wouldn't miss them as much if they left me. “There are girls who are much younger than Bella who have been through longer relationships than her and they haven't dared to jump off a cliff” - possibly because they didn't get to catch glimpses of their loved ones when they did that (I don't condone Bella's actions but I do understand them). Even Harry would have wasted away years of his life staring at the Mirror of Erised just to catch a glimpse of his parents. Dumbledore put on a cursed ring so he could see his sister again. They both did dangerous and foolish things to see people they thought they'd never see again.

It isn´t. Two persons can be diferent and be compared. You can compare Edward and Neville by saying Edward is a vampire and Neville isn´t. Edward is taller and more atractive. They have nothing to do with each other but still u can compare them.

Comparing something like Molly and Esme is okay I guess, as they are the motherly figures of the stories, but Bella and Hermione are nothing alike.

Sure, but I think what most people are hinting at is about comparing Hermione's personality to Bella's. Sure, as is obvious, there is a striking contrast between the two.

It is stupid to think Bella could be on the same level of awesomeness as Hermione.
Hermione is a human. According to Jo Rowling, muggles are human without powers, and witches and wizards are human with them. Even if Hermione didn't have magic, she would still be better. Bella is whiny; she is so ungrateful for what she does, and all she really cares about is Edward's looks. Have you read how many times she describes his 'flawless face' and his 'smoldering eyes.' Only one person can have a smolder, and that's Flynn Rider. Hermione is a strong female character who does not let her emotions really get in the way of anything. If she did, she would've left with Ron or flung herself off a cliff like Bella did. No, she chose to stick to her promise to Harry and help when he needed it. That's a true friend. Hermione won't let anyone push her around. If Ron tried to rip the engine out of her car, he would not hear the end of it. Hermione can take care of herself, but Bella is in constant need of Edward on which to depend. So, obviously, Hermione is the most practical choice. After all, she was voted the 2nd strongest female character in literary after Jane Eyre. Bella won't make the top 10,000 because she's such an awful, bland character who gave up her friends (Jessica was a little bitchy, but Angela was nice) and her family for Edward.

I don't think it's stupid to compare any character with another. Usually it can be quite thought provoking, and considering this is a debate spot, comparing is sensible. There's always something to compare.

No, they are different and go through different experiences, but they also share enough common ground that a comparison can be made between the two.
