Nirvana was the only band I know of that tried to stay on the Independent record industry as it was in early years during the epic 90's. The rest flowed with the public attention they got and some sold out (take Puddle of Mudd for example) Wikipedia even listed bands that should be cleared off as grunge because I heard their stuff and it doesn't sound grunge! Nirvana was always grunge and stands as a shining example of it, even Creed took after them in some ways. Grungers are fashion illiterate but dress neat in their own way, aren't image conscious which is evident and couldn't care less about image anyways and lastly grungers are free to produce their music in any way but won't dress it up for anyone because its their music, not the public's!
