Grammar Nazi Question

Can "fast" be used as an adverb?

I have been getting conflicting answers from the media. Some websites tell me it is perfectly acceptable to use the word this way, while others say that this is a colloquialism and should be avoided in all formal speech and writing.

Fast is an adjective. The adverb form is "quickly".

That's what I thought, but our grammar textbook seems to believe otherwise.

I just wouldn't use it, to be safe, as there are other words such as quickly, rapidly, etc. that for sure can be used in place of fast.
I think it's probably true that its usage as an adverb is a colloquialism... such as, "He ran fast." That seems like an okay sentence, especially in spoken language. But for writing, I would just try to avoid it.
