Icelandic group Of Monsters and Men is the latest musical act to make a cameo appearance on “Game of Thrones,” appearing as a traveling band seen in Sunday night’s devastating episode, “The Door.”
They join fellow Icelandic band Sigur Ros, who played during the infamous “Purple Wedding” scene in season 4, and American metal band Mastodon, who showed up as undead Wildlings in the “Hardhome” episode of season 5.

News of Of Monsters and Men’s appearance on “Game of Thrones” first emerged in September last year, when members of the group were photographed on set at one of the show’s Spain locations. In a chat for Interview magazine earlier in 2015, lead singer Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir said the band was obsessed with the series.
Of Monsters and Men, which released the album “Beneath the Skin” last year, in June will kick off a spate of tour dates in North America before heading back to Europe for additional summer shows. In the meantime, guitarist and co-vocalist Ragnar “Raggi” Thorhallsson gave Speakeasy an inside glimpse of how the band ended up on “Game of Thrones” — and whom he is rooting for to emerge victorious on the show — answering questions through email before the episode aired. An edited transcript:
It took me some time to get into the show at first. I had to rewatch the first five episodes of the first season to kind of “get it,” but as soon as I did that I was totally hooked.
We’d asked our manager a long time ago to ask them if we could be extras in it while they where shooting in Iceland, but nothing really happened, and our touring schedule was pretty crazy at that time anyways so we sort of just disappeared. But apparently they noticed our interest and the ball started rolling. I’m pretty sure our manager just kept asking and asking and finally they must have given in.

How long did it take to get into costume and makeup? How did the costumes feel?
It took forever! It was all quite impressive. The massive warehouse full of costumes and the endless attention to detail even for the extras. I really enjoyed that part of it, and the stylists and costume designers were great people as well. The costumes felt pretty good; it was kind of tiring to wear them all day though, but I do miss the shoes. I wanted to keep them.
On set, did you have any memorable interactions with cast or crew? If so, what happened?
I’m pretty sure I can’t tell you who of the main actors where there, but I can tell you that all of the people we talked to were very lovely. At one point everyone on set even started to sing the birthday song for Brynjar, our guitarist.

All day, from morning until evening. I didn’t realize how much work being an actor is. They’re at it all day repeating the same line for different camera angles over and over again, and they have to keep up the same high energy the whole day.
Are any of your songs influenced by Game of Thrones? “Thousand Eyes,” for instance, has lyrics and imagery reminiscent of the world.
Not directly but like anything you watch or read it automatically influences you in some way. We haven’t read the books, but I’m sure the shows have affected us in some way or shape.
I’m rooting for Arya Stark or Varys to win it all but I don’t think the Iron Throne matters that much anymore, there’s a bigger fight to be had.
What is your theory about how it will all play out?
I don’t know. Everyone will probably just be killed off one at a time except for Varys. I feel like he might be the last man standing.
