Game of Thrones: Sophie Turner on that tearful reunion

Since their family was violently shattered in season 1, there have been plenty of near-misses over the years where characters seemed like they were

about to come back together … then somehow didn’t. But in Sunday’s fourth episode of the season, “Book of the Stranger,” we saw Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) reunited for the first time since the show’s pilot, after Sansa, Brienne, and Podrick arrived at Castle Black.

Turner calls the reunion one of her favorite scenes to shoot in the series. “It’s such an emotional moment,” Turner tells EW. “She finally made it to Castle Black. And there’s this look where they’re just studying each other’s faces, with no expression. Then there’s this long embrace. It’s just awesome.”

In fact, Turner says Sansa joining up with Jon Snow was a plot development that had her most anticipating season 6. “I’m most excited for the fact I get to see Kit and get to act with him,” she says. “Kit is one of my best mates and we had just one scene together in the pilot, where we’re waiting on the king. It’s like working with an older brother. I’ve watched his work over the past four years and I think he’s amazing. He’s so focused and dedicated.”

Yet the emotional uplift of their reunion was quickly broken due to their conflicting agendas – Sansa wants to raise an army to reclaim Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton, while the resurrected Jon Snow is weary from fighting. Plus, there’s their long-held sibling rivalry – Sansa takes after her mother, Catelyn, who resented her husband’s illegitimate son (it was Arya, you’ll recall, who was close to Jon).

“People can kind of assume that Sansa’s very much like her mother and her mother wasn’t very fond of Jon,” Turner says. “But Sansa is also different from her mother so she tries her best.”

The resulting friction influences her relationship with Jon and Ser Davos, and is something you can expect to continue. “She’s been through so much,” Turner says. “She knows Jon is her older brother and Davos is older and wiser, but she’s probably been through more than both of them. She’s not just going to go along with other people’s decisions.”
