I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Ian McShane hints at his Game of Thrones Season Six role, reveals details | Watchers on the Wall | A Game of Thrones Community for Breaking News, Casting, and Commentary
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
cast in Season 6 last August, revealed some details about his role on
If you want to remain completely free of spoilers, then do not watch the video or read anything further, it goes without saying.
Shout out to our readey Wylie who alerted us to the clip. Always support the bottom!
Here is what McShane says: “My character really is like an ex-warrior who’s become a peacenik, so I have a group of peaceful … sort of a cult who … I bring back a much-loved character who everybody thinks is dead.”
We already knew about the second part; Ian McShane said in November: “I am responsible for bringing somebody back that you think you’re never going to see again. I’ll leave it at that.” He was also reportedly seen on set filming scenes with an outlaw band.
With his latest description of the role, we can now more firmly link McShane to the following casting call:
Priest, in his 40’s or 50’s. A gruff ex-soldier who found religion. Now a no-nonsense rural priest who ministers to the poor of the countryside. He’s salt-of-the-earth man who has weathered many battles.
As we have speculated, this would be the show counterpart of Septon Meribald, potentially combined with the Elder Brother of the Quiet Isle. We all know what character the books hint at still being alive connected to that storyline, and we had a Rory McCann sighting earlier. The pieces are all falling together nicely, don’t you think?

Al Swearengen don’t give a &$#! about keeping spoilers under wraps.
He is the leader of the faceless men and brings bak Syria Forel! Hopefully…
This is great news. Not surprising news, mind you, but I didn’t expect it to be confirmed until we actually saw McShane in the show.
So we will have Meribald, played by McShane no less, and he will bring the Hound back to us!
We really are getting a ton of new secondary and tertiary characters this season, aren’t we? Euron Greyjoy, Aeron (presumably), Septon Meribald, High Priestess Kinvara, the Three-eyed raven (technically not, but come on), Smalljon Umber, Harald Karstark, Wyman Manderly (or an equivalent), another Northern Lord (maybe a Celwyn), Randyll Tarly and the whole Tarly household (Dickon Tarly, Melessa Tarly, Talla Tarly), Izembaro and his acting troup (a Lady Stork-type and many others), a number of khals such as Jhaqo and Rhalko, as well as some bloodriders and other Dothraki such as Qhono and Ahko, the High Priestess of the Dosh khaleen and a Lazareen woman who is one of its younger members, a child of the forest, Bolton and Tyrell officers and generals, a captain of some tower, a Frey son, the so-called “Lachlan” and his group of outlaws, an Oldtown maester, and younger versions of Ned Stark, Arthur Dayne, Lyanna Stark, Benjen Stark and Howland Reed. And that’s just the ones we know about —a few must have slipped through the cracks.
Wow, great news! I am so interested in all the secondary characters being introduced this year…this is soon exciting.
This is amazing!!!! I so hope this means we get CLEGANEBOWL! This gets me more hyped than a trailer.
Could the character being brought back be LSH instead of the Gravedigger?
I hate it when actors do this. You signed a fucking NDA, now stay true to it. Not that I care about spoilers, but my respect for this fellow just dropped significantly.
I remember Meribald being a solo act in the books but it sounds like McShane will have a bunch of followers on the show.
I think he most likely is alluding to bringing back
though I suppose there is a very, very slight outside chance to bringing back
It does sound like his character could me a merger (and before anybody says anything I know other people have had the idea long before Sincerely Thine* – in fact it’s mentioned in the article above) * of SP and EB.
(* British [well it could be American too for all I know] English slang. “Yours sincerely” is a way of signing off a letter – “thine” is an old-fashioned way of saying “your” or “yours” singular – so “Sincerely Thine” is a jokey slang way of saying “me”).
I was waiting for this. You guys never give up in your hope, do you?
The common theory, based on the casting call description, is that McShane’s character will be a mix of Septon Meribald, who has the grizzled ex-warrior background, and the Elder Brother, the one who actually has followers.
No, considering that (a) his description sounds like a Meribald/Elder Brother combination, and nothing like the people involved in the latter story and (b) the show already cast the people involved in the latter story.
Though I’d love to have the Bad Ass with a Heartitude a.k.a Childhood Complex Clegane back, I hope this puts an end to the hopes of getting Lady Stoneheart on the show. There is only so much resurrection you can explain without fans expecting every dead character to come back. It is not a soap opera!
He probably hasn’t read the books and doesn’t realise how spoilery those vague remarks are to book readers…
Thanks for the recap! I can never remember all the characters that were somewhat confirmed.
Don’t judge him too much. I don’t think McShane could realize how revealing his words are to those who have read the books. From the point of view of those who haven’t read them, he didn’t reveal much —he just teased.
No worries. I was just curious so I looked at the list available on the GoT wiki and and I was somehow surprised at how many new characters there are, even though I added many of them to that list myself.
Well actually I missed the first part of this interview this morning and he (Mr McShane) was more hyping his cameo in the film “Dr Thorne” and talking about being friends with the former manager of Manchester United football team. I didn’t see the bit where he dropped the hint – but it won’t mean much to show-watchers only. Back when Season 3 was to be shown nobody thought that the disclosing of actors playing various parts at that year’s Comic-Con was a spoiler.
If anything his comments are a misdirection. Taken in the context of someone with no book knowledge, you’d think he’s talking about Jon Snow.
No . And besides Catelyn was never a beloved character, sorry Catelyn fans !
In any event, who is he spoiling, since those comments wouldn’t mean much of anything to people who haven’t read the books, and those who have read the books (and read them or the theories around them sufficiently closely) would already know that?
Guys, he’s bringing back Gendry. It is known.
He’s saying ‘people think HE’s dead,’ isn’t he? So this precludes any female characters.
Or he has been asked to troll us all. Maybe bringing The Hound and Shae were brought to set just to mess with us as well.
Or maybe he’s just telling the truth and your hopeful mind is making you think otherwise .
is coming back. Not that he was ever officially confirmed dead but you know in GoT anyone can be dead and come back. Paaaaaaaaalease let it be the
I’d have preferred that we had never known the truth for sure.
Really? I think Michelle was a much beloved character. I would venture to say she was very much liked by all for her excellent portrayal of Catelyn. IMHO…
Come on, seriously? He just teased, not like he dropped some big-ass spoilers on our heads.
That’s probably the line they gave him that he’s allowed to say. If you’ll notice, he’s repeated it more than once, the bringing back a much-loved character. Each of the actors is given a brief description of what they can say and they repeat it over and over. So this isn’t something he’s letting slip, this is his line, well-delivered.
Alert: I would so bang Ian McShane. I’ve had the hots for him for decades. Anyone watch Lovejoy? Kings? I’ve been wanting to be in a Rufus Sewell/Ian McShane sandwich since…forever.
He’s saying ‘people think HE’s dead,’ isn’t he? So this precludes any female characters.
He says “people think is dead” I believe so he doesn’t give away the gender.
As said above though anyone who hasn’t read the book will think he’s talking about Jon Snow.
Maybe he was told he can tease this info as a misdirection technique for those that are hoping
talvikorppi: r story and (b) the show already cast the people inv
you don’t have to read the books to be spoiled by what mcshane said.
what about Stannis? 😛 😛 (I know, i’m a dreamer… but i’m not the only one :P)
Transcript: “I bring back this cocksucker whom everyone thinks dead because I don’t want to be sucking hind teat on body disposal”
I’m hoping we get a Wylla Manderly speech on the wolves of Winterfell, to bookend Lyana Mormonts letter.
He is dead. Official. Read the book ”The Noble Houses of Westeros Seasons 1-5”. It is written twice that he is dead. But the directors said that as well, just like with Jon. They didn’t lie. They are both dead, but Jon will be resurrected and Stannis not. And there was a BeautifulDeath picture for Stannis after S05E10. Jon didn’t got a picture, so it was obvious even then. Those pictures is only for the characters who never come back. Sandor didn’t got BD picture neither. 😉
in got only beric and jon snow can die and come back. They were the only one in the GOT universe “cursed/blessed” by lord of light with this gift. Sorry this isn’t the book where everyone can be revived. HBO keeps the show grounded as much as possible. The magic and the use of it is treated more like a myth in the tv show.
Oh good. Not only the Hound, but also some strong Brienne storyline in there, too. This news pleases me.
Let my hubby watch the video. He is a GoT fan, but not to extend like we are. He thinks he is bringing Jon Snow back. There you have it.
I’m confused – my memory isn’t that great. Who else, other than Beric and LSH, was resurrected in the books? Jon Snow’s status is still unknown there.
Yep. Don’t dump your mommy issues on everyone else. I’m a fan of Book and Show Catelyn, and so are a lot of other people.
Ice Spider: Really? I think Michelle was a much beloved character. I would venture to say she was very much liked by all for her excellent portrayal of Catelyn. IMHO…
overeem: only beric and jon snow can die and come back
Don’t forget your date with Karsi later tonight. She might bring some friends too.
Let my hubby watch the video. He is a GoT fan, but not to extend like we are. He thinks he is bringing Jon Snow back.
Yes, I think you, and Conan and Making the 8 above, are right. We rabid fans tend to lose perspective now and again.
Oh good. Not only the Hound, but also some strong Brienne storyline in there, too. This news pleases me.
Yup. This is exciting news for Brienne as well. Personally, this is how I envision the storyline for Brienne this season:
Brienne and Podrick find Sansa and Theon being persued by Bolton scouts, who Brienne handily kills. Brienne swears her oath to Sansa yet again, except this time she accepts. As Sansa learnt from Ramsay that her bastard brother is the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, she decides they must seek refuge with Jon at the Wall. After Theon leaves them for the Iron Islands with Yara, Sansa, Brienne and Pod find Jon Snow in command of his few remaining loyal men and cohabitating with the wildlings.
Eventually, the siblings decide the Boltons must be taken out, and while that storyline begins a different one starts for Brienne: Once Sansa learns about Brienne’s relationship with Jaime, she decides to send the Lady of Tarth after the Kingslayer: she is to take him to Winterfell, which the Starks must have taken by the time Brienne returns north with Jaime (or died while trying). Brienne is reluctant, and tries to explain that Jaime is a different man now, that he made a vow to keep Catelyn’s daughters safe, yet Sansa coldly reminds Brienne she made oaths of her own, both to Catelyn and to Sansa.
Brienne and Podrick learn that Jaime is laying siege to Riverrun. On the way there, they clash with a band of outlaws who have turned on the land they swore to protect; while they use their religion to justify their deeds, they are extorting the poor and vulnerable of the countryside. Brienne and Pod are saved by Meribald, a former warrior turned septon who guides them to safety to the sept of his pacifist sect. The grizzled priest lectures them on the nature of “broken men” —outlaws who may be dangerous but should be pitied. It is revealed that in the sept now lives an injured yet reformed Sandor Clegane. Though she is hostile at first, Brienne lets Sandor go free as she concludes he is a changed man, a broken man who has found his way back.
Eventually, Brienne and Podrick reach Riverrun, much to Jaime’s surprise. Though the reunion is warm at first, it turns sour when Brienne tells Jaime about the half-truth that brings her to him: she has found Sansa, who was forcibly married into the Boltons and is in need of rescue. Jaime is unwilling to abandon the siege, despite Brienne’s reminder of his oath —which is put in evidence by Oathkeeper, the aptly-named sword he gave her to save the Stark girls. After Jaime tries to convince the Blackfish to give up, Brienne also reaches out to Brynden, informing him of Sansa’s true circumstances and of the resurgence of the Starks. This emboldens the Blackfish and he escapes in the night. With the siege apparently done, though under somewhat enigmatic circumstances, Jaime decides to honor his oath and travel north with Brienne and Pod. And away they all go —except for Bronn, who is only interested in gold and stays behind, after a bittersweet parting, his story presumably over for good.
Brienne, Pod and Jaime arrive in Winterfell after the so-called Battle of the Bastards. Jaime expected to deal with the Boltons and is confused to find Sansa Stark in power. Though Brienne tries to explain she had to keep her oath to Sansa, Jaime feels betrayed—she finally understands what Jaime told her about the futility of keeping contradicting oaths. An equivalent to the forthcoming events with Lady Stoneheart in “The Winds of Winter” takes place here —whatever the outcome, at the very least Jaime survives, to fulfill his role as Cersei’s “valonqar”.
It’s not LSH. I don’t think Catelyn Stark could be described as a “much loved character.” I mean, yes, she was an interesting and complex character, but she never had the cult following that the Hound had/has. GET HYPE!
Did we get a curtain call for Rory? Looking forward to Mcshanes scenes and assuming they will involve Brienne and pod as well as Sandor. Hoping one of our favourite double acts become a trio!!!!
Mind you I’m not so good at predictions I picked Howland Reed for McShane on the link above
Wow, I love this theory. Well done.
Where did he say that? Here are the quotes from this video and what was said previously, so is there somewhere else he says, “he”?
I bring back a much-loved character who everybody thinks is dead.
I am responsible for bringing somebody back that you think you’re never going to see again. I’ll leave it at that.
Granted, we are more likely to see fluffy Shetland unicorns and perhaps even Giant Penguins than we are to see LS. From those who have read the books, we know exactly whom he is bringing back.
We’ve debated the whole issue of Sansa wanting to get revenge on Jaime for whatever reason, so I don’t see a point in doing it again.
However, on the speculation about the Hound, I tend to think that whatever appearance he makes in Season 5 will be more about setting up his role going forward (whatever that is). At least per AFFC, Brienne has no idea that he’s alive, which doesn’t suggest that it’s important that she know that.
This is great news! The Hound is Arya’s subconscious and her conscience come to life, and is one of my favourite characters. He’s got bad teeth and a whole lot of attitude – which is usually not a good sign; but, I think The Hound flies in the face of our preconceptions – and prejudices – about people.
So the speculation was correct and we’ll be treated to the “broken men” speech by McShane. Season 6 is already the best based on that alone.
are now 95% sure, meanwhile everyone else just got a big misdirect. And he’s really just repeating the same information that’s out there.
Part of me was a little sad that he got such a small (albeit awesome) role when he could have crushed any number of other possibilities (I was—very wishfully—in the camp of an expanded Marwyn role). Until yesterday, that is. Mr. Wednesday can come and go as he pleases.
I love Michelle. Catelyn was a bit of a bitch. LS was a full-on bitch.
I’m obviously stoked they included Meribald (a great minor character) and very indpressive he’s played by Mcshane. But it does make me wonder about the Damphair. Many details in the casting Call could also fit on Aeron, so did they strip those traits from him, so no drowned men following? No born-again aspect? I just hope Aeron Will be a way og fleshing out the drowned god religion. A lot of religions are getting more focus in s6: Faith of the seven, Many faced god, lord of light, the dothraki faith, maybe even some version of the graces in mereen. Really hope Aeron is in, and not a red heering like varamyr last season
I think Ian McShane is more so the Elder Brother, not so much Meribald. And I think Elder Brother is Jon Darry. His story matches up perfectly, and Darry is the only one of Aerys’ KG whose death is never specifically explained, which is a huge red flag.
CLEGANEBOWL CONFIRMED GET HYPE. WHAT IS HYPE MAY NEVER DIE.
OMG, I’m glad I’m the only one at work right now, because I lost it.
This is great news. Not surprising news, mind you, but I didn’t expect it to be confirmed until we actually saw McShane in the show.
Sean C.: We’ve debated the whole issue of Sansa wanting to get revenge on Jaime for whatever reason, so I don’t see a point in doing it again.
I don’t think it’s “revenge”, really. At least not in the emotional, red-hot sense of the world. You’re again conflating LSH’s motives with LSH’s purpose in the plot; and I’m not talking themes here, just the barebones plot —getting Brienne and Jaime together again and into a possibly mortal conflict. In my summary I do not conflate LSH’s motives with the character’s plot purpose —I believe Sansa will take the latter, but not the former.
Sean C.: At least per AFFC, Brienne has no idea that he’s alive, which doesn’t suggest that it’s important that she know that.
Not everything is about pure plot. In the speculative summary I wrote, Brienne learning about it “only” serves as a nice character moment, a nice realization of the complexities of human nature, that the world isn’t neatly divided in good and evil men. It could happen, it could not. I didn’t write it that way because I think Brienne knowing about Sandor will pay off somehow beyond the immediacy of the event; the immediate event as a nice character moment for Brienne and Sandor is more than enough.
The Elder Brother isn’t anybody. Having him be someone important totally cuts against the point of the character, as a representative of the common soldier.
I don’t see why Sansa would suddenly demand to see Jaime Lannister either, in response to being told that he reformed and sent a knight with a Valyrian steel sword to help her. The two of them have never had anything to do with each other, and she’s got more pressing matters to deal with, too.
(I know, i’m a dreamer… but i’m not the only one)
I think I misheard ‘is’ for ‘he’s’ – someone has already corrected me upthread. Sorry!
Very good Luca. If all that came to pass I would not be disappointed. Two things I’d like a bit different than you though, I want a Jamie/Brienne love story ( this could happen on the way to winterfell in your prediction) and also I’d like Bronn to go too. Then he sells his sword to Sansa (they must be on at least cordial terms) and is in the show till the end
I’m confused – my memory isn’t that great. Who else, other than Beric and LSH, was resurrected in the books?Jon Snow’s status is still unknown there.
When McShane says “bringing back,” I’m sure he doesn’t mean from the dead. He likely brings the Hound back from the brink of death, from what fans assumed to be death; back to the show. But this isn’t another resurrection.
I would rate Jon’s chances of being resurrected at 99%, at least, which is almost part of the universe.
As to exactly what overeem said, he’s blowing some smoke when he says that the Red God has only blessed those two. We know LSH, right? And there is nowhere in the show or book canon yet that limits these powers to any individuals.
I think you’re wrong and him being Jon Darry and not just some random soldier adds a lot more weight to his character. It gives him a lot more insight to what happened in the past and it gives his actions now a lot more meaning.
Hoooooooooo boy I cannot WAIT for that monologue. McShane is a god.
Sean C.: I don’t see why Sansa would suddenly demand to see Jaime Lannister either, in response to being told that he reformed and sent a knight with a Valyrian steel sword to help her. The two of them have never had anything to do with each other, and she’s got more pressing matters to deal with, too.
You always say that. I don’t get it at all. Can you follow through with that logic, please? If I can get my hands on an important enemy general and figurehead (as Tywin’s eldest son and the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard), I will, whether there is a personal vendetta involved or not. And there is some of that too, as he is a Lannister, the family who killed her whole family and imprisoned her for years, even though Jaime didn’t do it personally. But revenge isn’t even needed: Jaime is an enemy general, and as I wrote it Sansa just learnt that he trusts one of her people, Brienne. Do you really believe she wouldn’t do anything with this information? Brienne would be much more needed as an agent that Jaime can trust than just another sword (by this point, Sansa would be gathering the Northern Lords). I think Sansa is too clever to ignore such an opportunity (to have Jaime turned, kidnapped or killed; whatever). Which is funny, because you’re always saying how the show ignores her cleverness and machinations and agency.
Moles Town bastard: I want a Jamie/Brienne love story ( this could happen on the way to winterfell in your prediction) and also I’d like Bronn to go too. Then he sells his sword to Sansa (they must be on at least cordial terms) and is in the show till the end
I want both of those things too. I’m a hardcore Brienne/Jaime shipper. But I don’t know if it will happen… though I do wish. As for Bronn, I think it’d be fun to still have him around… I just don’t think he would travel with Brienne and Jaime on such an uncertain mission.
One of the recurring themes in AFFC is the increased presence of people outside the aristocracy pushing back at the people and system that have devastated the continent. All three of the notable priest characters we see are representative of this, approaching the situation in different ways and from different viewpoints. Much like the theories about the High Sparrow being Howland Reed or whatever else, it undercuts the thematic points being made for him to be somebody ‘important’ in disguise.
You know how it’s a whole thing in musicals to have the one older role that gets filled by a super famous veteran actor? The role mostly dodders obliviously between the younger cast’s choreography, sprinkling one-liners, but then gets a single song that brings the house to tears and reminds everyone that old actors can act on a whole other level because they’ve actually lived through the full human experience.
Like, if you were to watch a compilation reel of every name to ever grace the title sequence, Ian McShane would still get the very last “AND…” billing.
True, but every showrunner of every show ever made tends to serve the average fan rather than the die-hards, as they outnumber us by 5000:1.
That being said, I loved Catelyn as well. I’m not picking any favorites in this battle.
Bronn would go anywhere if the price was right and I apologise for spelling your name wrong terrible manners
I agree Bronn is in it for the money. I just don’t imagine Brienne will offer up any, or Jaime, at least for that particular mission. I would be very happy to be wrong, though!
Jon Darry was never part of any aristocracy, he only served one. And that wouldn’t negate any of the themes in AFFC. It would actually make perfect sense for Darry to go this route considering what happened. We already know that his father was a night, and his grandfather was a night. We know that the Elder Brother fought on the Trident for House Targaryen. We know that Dayne, Whent, and Hightower died at the TOJ, and Llewyn Martell got cut down by Lyn Corbray. How did Darry die? You don’t think that it’s strange that GRRM, A huuuge stickler for every little detail, would solely omit how Darry died? No, he would never leave a detail like that out without good reason. And this series in general isn’t just about the smallfolk and life through their eyes, but the people who serve those in power (Davos, Hotah, Brienne, Arys Oakheart, The Hound, etc.)
Maceless Fan: Jon Darry was never part of any aristocracy, he only served one.
Come on. He was a nobleman, a knight and a member of a royal guard. He served men higher in the social order, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t part of the aristocracy. By that logic, only the king is a nobleman.
And I agree with Sean C., not everyone is someone else in disguise; especially not characters such as the Elder Brother and the High Sparrow, considering the whole point of them is to show the rise of the common people. It would be quite cheap (and thematically contradictory) to reveal that these religious uprisings of the smallfolk are in fact orchestrated by noblemen.
Jon Darry was never part of any aristocracy, he only served one.
Yes he was. He was a member of House Darry, one of the oldest noble houses in the Riverlands.
These raises many questions though. I never thought Cleganebowl was gonna happen in the books, but in the show it’s definitely gonna happen or they wouldn’t waste time reintroducing the Hound.
So, is Cleganebow going to happen in the books or is one of the changes they are introducing in the show to make it more “cinematic”? Personally, I always thought that the Hound staying as a religious monk was an adequate end to his ark, having finally left violence behind.
This makes me very happy! Was so hoping that he was Septon Meribald and helped my favorite hound!
People should watch this video. The Elder Brother he talks about fits the description of Ian Mcshane’s role.
Rory McCann did receive a Curtain Call, back on the old website. As I recall, however, Axey added a humorous angle to his tribute by vehemently denying throughout the piece that Sandor was actually dead. 😉
I meant he wasn’t part of the royal family. And I never said he was orchestrating anything. He just lives a quiet life trying to help others. s a matter of fact, it makes perfect sense why he would especially help the Hound, considering the similarities in the two men. They were both KG that the world thinks dead and the Elder Brother clearly prefers it this way. If he’s Jon Darry and he comes back into the story in a major way, I don’t think that it would be orchestrated but just by chance. He didn’t know that he would run into a dying Sandor Clegane, so he probably wouldn’thave planned Cleganebowl or anything like that. The Elder Brother, when talking to Brienne, also felt the need to mention that there’s always been major beef between House Darry and House Frey.
Luka Nieto: Yup. This is exciting news for Brienne as well. Personally, this is how I envision the storyline for Brienne this season:
[long block in spoilers snipped, can be found at 10.10am] I really like your speculations here and on the forum because they’re grounded on what we know from the show, casting info, filming spoilers etc. plus also books.
I agree with much of the first part, though I’m not sure about
Sansa’s reason/motivation in sending Brienne south to find Jaime.
However, we know from filming spoilers that
Jaime and Brienne will meet again and there will be some sort of an argument, Brienne storming out of the tent or something.
if it happens, and I’d think it’d be great if it does. I’m just not sure it’d go quite as you speculated… Ho-hum, I haven’t thought of a better scenario so maybe you’re right. 😀
As to Jaime and Brienne meeting again, I think you’re right, there has to be some conflict of vows, that’s what Jaime’s story is all about in the books, and also largely in the show. Brienne has to be put into a similar position that Jaime faced so that she’ll truly understand.
Them going North together is interesting because there’s (book) fan speculation that Jaime has regrets about Rhaegar’s children… And a child of Rhaegar’s might be there, handy for Jaime to “atone”.
Jaime will be a “kingmaker”, and as (f)Aegon is cut from the show, Jon is the only alternative.
I don’t know how that’d work, there’s the small matter of Jaime having killed King Aerys,
Jon’s potential grandfather, not to mention having been instrumetal in the downfall of Jon’s adoptive/maternal family (Starks).
I agree that Jaime will survive this encounter because there’s the
Except, there isn’t in the show. Anyway, he’d have to do quite a lot of jetpacking up and down Westeros to do all these things in the next season or two.
Not to mention new problems for him that might arise when Dany FINALLY gets her pretty little arse over to Westeros – Jaime killed her mad dad. It’s not looking so good for our knight in not-so-shining-armour. Basically, he’s doomed, it’s just a question of how long will he be able to survive.
Yes!! I’ve so missed his painful wisdom! What a great actor-perfect for such a complex man!!
But will it be Brienne, Jaime, or Arya that run into him? Could really go either way. Also, this seals the deal on the “broken men” speach, and it’ll probably be the name of that episode too.
This season is just payoff, payoff, confirming fan theories and even more payoff.
Technically yes, but at this point in the story LS would be jumping the shark (resurrecting Cat and Jon in the same season after the show prides itself on murdering characters would be beyond ridiculous), whereas the Hound actually makes sense since he was still rather far from death when we last saw him. LS at this point just doesn’t seem likely at all, but the Hound was always a possibility.
I only realized how close they sounded after I posted. Thanks, Yaga.
It’s a nice idea, but it totally misses the point of Brienne’s arc, that she will suffer for choosing to avenge Renly over saving Sansa. So if she meets up with Sansa right away and sees Sansa is fine, there’s really no punishment for Brienne.
It’s also just subbing in Sansa for LSH and, why? LSH is just a plot device to reunite Jaime and Brienne.

Exactly. Sansa will be doing other stuff in the season. She can also take care of that plot device.
Thanks for that! There was a photo released of that scene months ago and I disappointed that it wasn’t in an episode, but I’m glad it’s been released as a deleted scene.
After viewing all the evidence, I would say this is the most impressive clue:
And yet you’re on a site dedicated to getting the scoop on what happens on the show before the show airs. And youre complaining about it. Ok.
I think Ian McShane is more so the Elder Brother, not so much Meribald.
I agree. The casting call description may point moreso at Meribald but McShane describes Elder Brother pretty closely; a former knight that now ‘leads’ a cultish group and theorized to have revived Sandor.
Earlier McShane said his role is small but important. Meribald didn’t do any resurrecting but if that character’s storyline were duplicated in the show it would be a lengthier role than Elder Brother. It seems likely that the show would combine the two characters, but, I don’t think we’re going to see much of book Meribald since it’s a small role and the major plot inclusion is that of Elder Brother’s storyline.
Many of us have speculated that McShane’s character will fulfill the Elder Brother’s role, but he’ll have Meribald’s ‘salt of the Earth’ personality and his “Broken Men” speech. And his name too, possibly.
This all sounds plausible and ties together different story lines and characters neatly but do you think
Blackfish makes it north in time to join in the Battle of Bastards or will he join them later? Curious of your opinion, thanks.

You missed the point of Brienne needing to suffer for choosing revenge over Sansa. If she comes back and Sansa is fine, you miss that emotional beat completely.
I think you’ve written a pretty story, but I have serious doubts that it’s going to happen because it misses the overall story themes.
I’ll laugh if this isn’t about Sandor ‘Hound’ Clegane! Who else can be described as ‘much loved, thought dead’? What if this is classic theatre, using misdirection (perhaps with smoke and mirrors, or salt)?
Bugger Battling with Ramsbottom. It’s a…. DANCE-OFF, bro…. on a grander scale! Get hippy!
“You fought hard and you saved and earned – But all of it’s going to burn!”
I think that may be season 7 material. After the siege, I believe Blackfish will reappear in the finale to take bloody revenge on the Freys in retaliation to the Red Wedding. At the same time, Arya will have arrived in the Riverlands, and I believe she’ll assassinate Walder Frey. I have no opinion yet on whether Brynden and Arya will see or even help each other.
