The word alchemy may derive from the Old French alquimie, which is from the Medieval Latin alchimia, and which is in turn from the Arabic al-kimia. This term itself is derived from the Ancient Greek chemeia or chemia with the addition of the Arabic definite article al- The ancient Greek word may have been derived from a version of the Egyptian name for Egypt, which was itself based on the Ancient Egyptian word kēme (hieroglyphic Khmi, black earth, as opposed to desert sand).
The word could also have originally derived from the Greek chumeia meaning "mixture" and referring to pharmaceutical chemistry. With the later rise of alchemy in Alexandria, the word may have derived from Χημία, and thus became spelled as χημεία, and the original meaning forgotten. The etymology is still open.

Alchemy covers several philosophical traditions spanning some four millennia and three continents. These traditions' general penchant for cryptic and symbolic language makes it hard to trace their mutual influences and "genetic" relationships. One can distinguish at least three major strands, which appear to be largely independent, at least in their earlier stages: Chinese alchemy, centered in China and its zone of cultural influence; Indian alchemy, centered around the Indian subcontinent; and Western alchemy, which occurred around the Mediterranean and whose center has shifted over the millennia from Greco-Roman Egypt, to the Islamic world, and finally medieval Europe. Chinese alchemy was closely connected to Taoism and Indian alchemy with the Dharmic faiths, whereas Western alchemy developed its own philosophical system that was largely independent of, but influenced by, various Western religions. It is still an open question whether these three strands share a common origin, or to what extent they influenced each other.

The demise of Western alchemy was brought about by the rise of modern science with its emphasis on rigorous quantitative experimentation and its disdain for "ancient wisdom". Although the seeds of these events were planted as early as the 17th century, alchemy still flourished for some two hundred years, and in fact may have reached its apogee in the 18th century. As late as 1781 James Price claimed to have produced a powder that could transmute mercury into silver or gold.
Robert Boyle, better known for his studies of gases (cf. Boyle's law) pioneered the scientific method in chemical investigations....

Practical applications of alchemy produced a wide range of contributions to medicine and the physical sciences. Alchemists Jābir ibn Hayyān and Robert Boyle are both credited as being the fathers of chemistry. Paracelsian iatrochemistry emphasized the medicinal application of alchemy (continued in plant alchemy, or spagyric). Studies of alchemy also influenced Isaac Newton's theory of gravity. Academic historical research supports that the alchemists were searching for a material substance using physical methods.
It is a popular belief that Alchemists made contributions to the "chemical" industries...

“y is it u feel the need 2 piss me off?” Bradley growls as he tries again 2 kill me and I nimbily avoid.
“well because I'm like u.” I reply, rolling under his next slash.
“how so?!” he replies, stabbing straight down at me.
“imma lowlife.” I say simply as I grab the sword with my automail arm and move out of the way. The thin layer of skin cuts and heals over quickly when I let go. “tho in ur case ur livin' the highlife.”
“u think i'm a lowlife?!” he tries again 2 slash me and this time I land on the sword with my automail leg and balance perfectly. He glares at me and moves...

“what way does a tree fall?” I ask simply.
“what a stupid question from a stupid child. A tree falls down.” Bradley scowls.
“wrong...” I say, looking at him.
“WRONG?!”
“a tree falls the direction it leans.” I reply evenly, un-phased. “u should have been more careful...of the direction u chose...it's a simple matter. 1 day u'll have 2 face the truth u've set 4 urself...the seeds u've planted will grow.” I turn and start 2 walk away, then turn bak and look at him. He seems befuddled. After all...we were just fighting. “will u b able 2 withstand the force they...

"Hmm...the law of Equivalent Exchange...if I want to be a good alchemist like Pop, then I'd better start reading..." a young boy sighs, "Let's see...in order to create, something of equal value must be lost...hmm...what does that mean...?" The young boy is Jason. His Father was a skilled Alchemist that loved learning and perfecting new styles of Alchemy in his younger days. He was killed in an accident caused by the Full-metal Alchemist. "I'll get him back for this...he won't live to see his killer...the Full-metal alchemist...he'll pay..." Jason growls. He then draws a small, but perfect,...

The final and most current chapter of this story of ours...and the 1 that's still unraveling.
We decided after making the Aquosea Stone that we would use it 2 help the Humunculi and Chimeras if it was possible...
Our plan was simple...we knew that Ed and Al were trying 2 kill them all..and 4 some we were 2 l8 2 stop them from being killed...but the stone aloud us 2 bring them bak so it didn't matter much either way....but having them alive made things a bit easier. When they were dead we simply had them rebuild around the Aquosea Stone instead of a Philosopher's Stone, and when they were alive...

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the focus of alchemical development moved to the Islamic World. Much more is known about Islamic alchemy because it was better documented: indeed, most of the earlier writings that have come down through the years were preserved as Arabic translations. The word alchemy itself was derived from the Arabic word الكيمياء al-kimia. The Islamic world was a melting pot for alchemy. Platonic and Aristotelian thought, which had already been somewhat appropriated into hermetical science, continued to be assimilated during the late 7th and early 8th centuries....

Take solace in rage
for fear is blinding
and hate is cruel and useless

These things make me wonder...
About the poisons I have within.
So many...all of which were listed

Rage for those who deserve death
tempt me and make me tense
and push me to the edge.

For those who have no excuses for what they do...
who feel life is disposable until it actually ends.
Then suddenly feel guilty for those they pushed to the end.

All the people who claim to love life...
they forget a part, though...
they love only some life...only THEIR life.

I take my solace from rage.

Fear only blinds...
so have no fear of predilection.
I...

this simple principle is something i've always believed, even on the other side. I am all in that I can comprehend things and kno things and I am 1 in that I am only a small part of a grander theme. I am all in that I kno this but I am only 1 tht does. All is everything from the rocks 2 the river, 2 u and I...and 1 is a single part in a massive thing...i suppose this could b call the second founding principle of alchemy. I found out I could use alchemy when I had gotten away and was sitting in a tree crying...when I looked down there was a patch of flowers beneath me...1 for every 1 of my tears...of...
