Frozen quickly became one of Disney's most beloved films. There's a lot of reasons why, but the main reason was because of one of the film's protagonists, Queen Elsa. Elsa connected to people for a lot of reasons. Disney princesses are common, but queens usually aren't very prominent in films. Elsa's song, Let it Go, quickly became one of the biggest songs in the entire world. It was a song about Elsa learning to stop hiding her ice powers. However, the song took on a new life as a metaphor for coming out.

When it comes to Disney princesses, they almost always get together with a prince. Frozen took things in a much different direction by making the prince the villain. Because of this, Princess Anna doesn't end up with Prince Hans. However, she does get together with Kristoff, an ice seller. What about Elsa? Well, Elsa didn't get a love interest. This was unexpected for a lot of fans. Elsa became one of Disney's most popular characters, so you would expect her to find a love interest in the second film. However, to this day, Elsa remains single. This has led to speculation about Elsa's sexuality.

So, is Elsa heterosexual?

Most likely not. She doesn't have any ship tease with any male characters in either of the films. In the first film, both Kristoff and Hans serve as potential love interests for Anna, but Elsa shows no interest in either of them. In Frozen 2, we are introduced to another male character, Ryder. However, Elsa has no real interactions with him. In the second film, there is a flashback that shows Elsa and Anna as kids. Anna plays with a snow doll of a man and a woman, and she has the man and woman kiss. Elsa's reaction is being grossed out. Also, in the first film Hans mentions that he wanted to get together with Elsa, but Elsa showed no interest in getting together with anyone. All of this seems to imply that Elsa is no heterosexual.

So, is Elsa homosexual?

This is more likely than her being heterosexual, although I still have my doubts. Elsa's Let it Go song can be seen as a song about coming out if you view the lyrics as being afraid of coming out of the closet rather than Elsa hiding her powers. I think it's wonderful that so many people connected with the song and used it as a metaphor for coming out. However, I don't believe the song is meant to be seen as Elsa coming out. In Frozen 2, Elsa's Into the Unknown song also has lyrics that can be seen as a coming out song out of context, as does Elsa's Show Yourself song. However, it's later revealed that the person Elsa was singing to was the spirit of her mother. This makes the songs about a family love rather than a romantic love.

In Frozen 2, we are introduced to Honeymaren. Honeymaren, who is Ryder's sister, is the main person in the Enchanted Forest that Elsa communicates with. Honeymaren's scenes with Elsa were brief, but they were enough to inspire a passionate ship. Lots of Frozen fans, including myself, love shiping Elsa with Honeymaren. However, as much as I hate to admit it, I don't think Elsa's in love with Honeymaren. In the film, Elsa and Honeymaren quickly become friends and they have good chemistry between each other, but their bond never really comes across as anything more than friendship. Some people saw Honeymaren asking Elsa to stay in the Enchanted Forest as Honeymaren asking Elsa to move-in with her. The scene can be interpreted that way, but I'm not sure. So far, Honeymaren hasn't done much, so it's hard to determine how close she and Elsa will become. At this point in time, I see Honeymaren as a good friend of Elsa's.

So, is Elsa asexual?

In my opinion, this seems most likely. Lots of fans believe that Elsa is gay, because she never shows an interest in men or romance. However, she never shows any real interest in getting together with a woman. Because of how secretive and shy Elsa has been, it can be hard to determine certain things about her. However, from everything I've seen, Elsa doesn't seem like someone who ever wants to date. Her sister, Anna, serves as her non-romantic soulmate. As long as Elsa has Anna in her life, I believe Elsa has all the love she needs. In the Frozen films, Elsa learns to bond with her sister and her new friends. However, that doesn't change the fact that Elsa is a strong, independent woman. She doesn't need a king or a prince. She's happy with herself and who she is. Because of all of this, I see Elsa as an asexual character and one of the most important asexual icons of all time.
