I try to add a lot of quality content to this site, and I would like to think I succeed. However, there is no way to know for sure without your help. A question that constantly plagues my mind is, "What do you think?"
There are a couple of different ways to let people know what you think about their content. One is rating, which is definitely the most concise way to show your feelings. However, sometimes just rating isn't enough to get your point across especially if the rating is unusually low.
In the past week or two I have had a number of extremely low ratings on a lot of my contributions. I could completely accept these ratings if I had an explanation of why the rating was so low. However, when I add what I think is high quality content and get low rating is leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.
So, now what is the answer to this problem? The answer I have found that seems to work the best is commenting. This is a wonderful way to let people know why you rated their content the way you did. For example, if you are rating it low because it is a duplicate picture or video, leave a comment with the link to the previous posting. If you are rating it low because the quality is substandard, then leave a comment saying what exactly you thought was inadequate. Personally, I do not find it offensive when people leave comments to this affect. I take it as constructive criticism, and I may be speaking out of turn, but I think most people would say the same thing as long as the comment has tact. For example instead of saying, “I already posted this link, idiot!” you could say something like, “I already posted this link (insert URL). Great minds think alike, so remember to check to make sure to check before you add content to make sure it is not a duplicate.”
Now, I am not saying that it is always necessary to leave comments on everything you view, but I do think it is appropriate especially if you rate something a 1 (which is defined as “garbage” by the rating system). If there is something terribly wrong with content then it is not only helpful to the contributor to know what is wrong with it, but it is also helpful to other users who are viewing material. For example if you rated a movie low because only half of it is there, then if you leave a comment other people won’t watch it just to find out that it is not complete.
A comment is also a wonderful way to let someone know you appreciated their contribution. If you like it let someone know by leaving them a comment telling them that you liked it. It always brightens my day when I see a comment saying that someone appreciated my work. It is not necessary, but it is a nice thing to do occasionally to make someone smile, since they made you smile with their content :)
I really hope that this explains why comments are so important. Thank you so much for reading! You guys rock, let’s continue to make Fanpop a great place!
