As far as I can tell there has been no official announcements on why they have decided to cancel the anime. This information is more likely to come to light when the anime actually ends on March 30th.
A lot of people seem to be saying that it is because the anime is catching up to the manga. I find this unlikely because of the point it is stopping at, seems a bit of an awkward place to stop. If this were the reason then it would make more sense for them to stop at the end of the arc seeing as the manga has nearly reached that point anyway.
Personally I think it is going to be a reason like what happened with Gintama. That the staff are struggling to keep up with the weekly schedule so they are taking a break so they can sort of stockpile some episodes before they begin airing again.
Whatever the reason, Fairy Tail is a popular anime so I seriously doubt that they would stop the anime all together. Mashima has promised some good news for when the anime ends so it is likely to be something along the lines of when the anime will be back.
Don't worry, unless something catastrophic has happened like the studio has gone bankrupt ("not a chance"), Fairy Tail is more than likely to be come back.

I personally think that we have to wait for maybe half a year until the anime will resume. Or maybe it will not resume since the anime is catching up to the manga and the anime's rank is a lot lower than manga's. Therefore, the staff might give up the anime and continue the manga.
Its current ratings and sales in Japan have sucked terribly lately... just like FT itself ¬¬

The ratings have declined but are still decent, not so bad as having "sucked terribly". The manga sales are still doing good; can't find anything on the DVD sales though.
manga sales have nothing to do with the anime, no point bringing that up. The current arc has got worse ratings then Bleach's Fullbringer arc, the same arc that was unpopular enough to get it cancelled ¬¬
Meh, I wanted to say something about the sales, and the manga was the only details I could find. I don't watch Bleach so sorry if my information is a bit wrong, but there wasn't an official statement as to why they cancelled it, Fullbringer was just the last arc, the ratings were already down because of previous arcs. In Fairy Tail's case, what were the ratings like for the Zentopia arc? I would understand them cancelling it due to ratings if Fairy Tail had been showing a decline for a while, but the Tenrou arc was good and it would have been much more reasonable for them to finish the arc and then cancel the series.
all the info I have is from what I've seen posted by people on other sites so you would be better off looking else where for info. plus I've heard the movie flopped so hard it ain't getting a dvd/bd release, just bundled with the latest volume... thats a clear sign the anime isn't that popular anymore.
I'll agree with you that the movie was bad, at least in my opinion, I keep seeing good reviews for it. It had it's DVD release in Japan on the 15th February, so it didn't do too badly.
i know i'm a little bit late for this but i wanna say a few things...
first, Fairy Tail will be cancelled but Mashima is obviously eager to tell us something he can't say yet. but he did say it's not over and i quote: "Anime is not the end. Don't stop believing."
i've got 2 thoughts about that.
1. he's planning on making a new anime (based on a manga of his)
2. Fairy Tail is taking a break so that the manga will proceed ahead for a while.
i doubt an anime will be cancelled so rashly just because ppl aren't buying the DVDs. but what about the tv audience? FT isn't selling like it used to but does that mean ppl aren't watching it on tv? last time i checked i didn't go buy every single show i saw on tv...
and the story isn't EVEN COMPLETE YET! (i just had to rage a little.) FT has been doing great and they can't just go around saying things about Zeref and dragons and never get to the bottom of it. i could read the manga but the anime still deserves a proper ending.

this ending is even worse than Bleach's...
FT is one of my fav shows and it really sucks that it's ending. (or is it? :o)

What I heard is that Lucy's voice actress has quit! and one of my friends said that they are either going to get Lucy back or continue fairy tail next year... next year is two far away for me
I think it has been stopped because it has apparently caught up with the manga now so they decided to stop it until there is a decent enough gap so that they can restart the anime again. To answer your second question, yes I think we can expect more episodes of Fairy Tail. However, I'm not to sure when that will be. Hoped this helped!!
apparently the girl who did the voice of Lucy was a bit of a hoe and worked her way around the office and cause some infighting and they stopped making the show.
idk if this is true or not and i realize this answer is quite late but a anime friend of mine said that the voice actress for lucy made a sex tape or something with her band and they fired her instantly and that story seems to be true imo because Crunchyroll which is an anime site to watch anime took off FT from its choices or whatever around the same time my friend told me that. i dont know where he got the information from but he knows tons more than me about a lota animes. hope this helps for whoever visits late. :P
