New Dog on the Block
[Bolt's Point of View]
I was awakened by a sudden impact on my head. My eyes slowly opened trying to adjust to the light. My hearing was still trying to process voices, but I could hear Mittens say, “Okay, next time, I’m waking him up.” I slowly stood up and stared at Mittens and Rhino.
“Um… Can I help you,” I ask.
“No, we just thought you should look out the window,” Rhino replied.
I did what he said and saw a moving van in front of the house across the street. “How long have I been asleep?”
“Well, it’s 10:30 now,” Mittens replied.
“Oh. I guess I need to start sleeping earlier.”
“Maybe… Anyway, I heard Penny’s mother say that we’re going to welcome them once they get settled in.”
“Okay. Well that sounds like a good idea. So what’s for bre- I mean lunch?”
We all got a laugh out of that one.
A few minutes later, we all walked across the street to meet our new neighbors. The human portion of the family includes a full set of parents and one boy somewhere around Penny’s age, Ryan.
While I was watching them, I heard a voice say, “N- No way!” I turned my head to see a dog trembling with excitement. She was about my size, but she was colored like a German shepherd. “Y-You- You’re-”
“Bolt,” I finished.
“Yes,” a black cat replied, “Sorry about that, but Maria here is a huge fan of yours.”
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t you know?”
I looked at Mittens who gestured a few of my “superpowers.” “Oh yeah! That’s right! It’s a long yet interesting story…”
“So what are you doing out here? Shouldn’t you be on your show?”
“Well, I’m done with the camera plus the company hadn’t been too fair with me.”
“What do you mean,” Maria asked.
“I’ll explain later. I’m Bolt by the way.”
“I know.”
I face-pawed myself. “That was dumb.”
“Maybe, but I thought it was cute.”
That caused me to blush wildly, which earned a laugh from Rhino.
“Okay… Anyway, the laughing furball over there is Rhino and the cat’s name is Mittens.”
“Hey!” Rhino shouted.
“Rhino… the hamster,” Maria asks.
“I get that a lot.”
“Huh. Well, nice to meet you all. My name’s Maria and this is Cobra.”
“Charmed,” Cobra said.
“Bolt, Mittens, Rhino, it’s time to go,” Penny said.
“Well, I guess we’ll see you two later,” I said.
“Okay,” Maria said before licking me on the cheek. “See you soon.”
That caused me to blush even more! For the entire trip home, I had to listen to Rhino singing, “Bolt and Maria sittin’ in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
Very mature Rhino…
