I want to take this opportunity to talk about Disney character Meet and Greets. Now I think that guests should meet and greet and interact with the characters, but I feel that Meet and Greets in general make the characters feel they're employees. A guest said it best on a special on Travel Channel, "When you go to Disney World, you're not going to a park, you're going to a world." With that said, the characters should feel like they're in a world, a home, but when they are in a Meet and Greet, where they basically just stand in one spot for a designated amount of time and then disappear and come back at a certain time, it just feels like they're just paid employees.
In my opinion, the characters should do what I like to call, "Free Roam." Free Roam is when the characters can roam freely around the park and do what they want. They can talk with guest, go on the rides, eat at the restaurants, talk with each other, see the live shows, and even just laze around certain parts of the park. That way, it feels more like the park is the characters home, a home that we are visiting.
Now I know what most of you are probably thinking, "but bluethunder25, don't you remember the early days of Disneyland when it first opened when Walt saw a cowboy walking through Tomorroland and thought it didn't look right?" Well here's the solution to the problem, have certain characters roam freely, as long as it's not outside their own section of the park. For example, cowboys can roam through Frontierland, spacemen through Tomorrowland, and so on and so forth. Certain characters like Mickey, Donald, goofy and Minnie can roam around any part of the park at anytime. But there can be times when all characters can roam around the whole park, like during live shows like, "Dream Along with Mickey," and "Wishes."
So in conclusion, I truly feel that the Disney characters should be allowed to roam freely in the parks. Disney World is supposed to be a world, so let it be a world and let the characters do what they want as opposed to just being in one spot and signing autographs all the time.
