I was confused on whether or not she actually died and was all "Forget this. I'm watching my Disney one again." However, I don't remember the book mentioning the mermaid being in pain or dancing. There is much more at stake, and it is not the usual happily ever after, which was sort of his point, seeing as he was a deeply depressed man.
