I don't know why. If their movies weren't successful or if they're not "princesses", why were they added to the lineup in the first place? Why hasn't Disney booted them if they aren't marketable?

I doubt it's because the movies weren't that successful, because TPATF was less successful and they market Tiana all the time.

(maybe because of a racial issue...which is really unfortunate)

That and their characters are hard to place in the typical stuff the franchise loves to sell (tea parties, poofy dresses...). Their dresses clash with the rest of the other princesses' more glamorous dresses. And little girls seem to favor more princesses with lots of accessories (shiny dresses, jewelry, etc etc).

There are tons of fluffy sparkly Asian dresses they stuff Mulan in, I honestly think it's because there movies weren't major and that they aren't princesses. Tiana has a frilly dress, but her movie wasn't super successful, she's only given more merchandising than Mulan and Pocahontas because she is a princess and she was the first African American Disney Princess. I don't think it has to do with race or how fluffy their dresses are, I think it has to do with how successful the movie is. And the only successful movie with P.o.C Disney Princess is Jasmine, but she's not the main character; However she is a princess, again making her sell more.

The whole thing about stereotypical princesses is crap, crap, crap and more crap. They are the most inspiring princesses and yet they get no recognition because they don't act girly and whatnot.

Well both Native American and Chinese cultures don't have poofy gowns and things like that

Wow there is a huge misunderstanding here on how marketing works!

First of all, even the answer I picked isn't completely correct....merchandising isn't always cohesive with how good a movie does, a person can adore Mulan but it doesn't mean they want Mulan dolls or Mulan backpacks....merchandising it's a whole subject on its own, one of the reasons Cinderella dresses sell more than belle gowns is because people just like the color blue more...so don't blame the movies...how well merchandise does is a whole other subject that could or could not have anything to do with how well the movie did...it all depends

So why do I think Mulan and Pocahontas merchandise doesn't sell as much? Alot can be culture...sorry but native and Chinese isn't a very large portion of the USA population, some young girls that aren't native or Chinese may feel out of place wearing an obviously different culture dress than their own, being able to relate to characters always sells very strongly, aspecially among the youth, though there are exceptions, despite Mulan being Asian, the most popular princesses are frozen Norwegian sisters in Japan, not Mulan! Though they claim that Japan responded well to frozen because of the sister storyline and the super powers.

Point blank, it's never one thing, and a good question to ask is look at ur behaviors as a consumer...do u buy Mulan and Pocahontas stuff? Why or why not? I adore them both, but I don't..I prefer other princess merchandise

And I'm Spanish I don't just automatically buy anything from a Spanish Disney movie, frankly My favorite merchandise is Ariel and frozen and brave...simply because I love mermaid stuff and I love frozen stuff and I love Merida dolls..I'm not my culture, I have personal preferences....and I actually like beauty and the beast as a film more! See? It's not so black and white

I've kept this to myself for a while now, but I feel like it should be said. I feel like they don't market Pocahontas as much because they might accidentally offend real-life members of her tribe. Then again, I could be wrong.

I would definitely buy Mulan and Pocahontas stuff if I could just find them. Actually I watch through all old DP magazines from flea markets and if they have featured either Mulan or Pocahontas (or maybe Esmeralda or Jane), I'll buy it. It's only like 10 cents and I love Mulan and Poca comics.

It's a combination of their movies not being the biggests hits Disney had and marketing department not being able to think past tea parties and poofy dresses.

I'm not sure about Mulan, but when Pocahontas originally came out, there was plenty of merchandise surrounding her character. Everywhere you went there were Meeko plushies, shirts with her face on it, necklaces were sold that looked like her own, and everyone was digging the Colors of the Wind song. Then one day, it was replaced by another princess fad and gradually forgotten by people.

I think that, while it had a decent run, it really all comes down to whether or not something is marketable depending on what is popular at that point in time. Not much more to it, but even when it comes to merchandise for adults based on DPs you don't see a whole lot of Mulan and Pocahontas. So perhaps, cultural-wise, they just aren't quite as relatable to most people.
