I just finished watching Pocahontas 2 and I really wanted to write an article about what I feel for this sequel. If you haven't seen the movie, don't read this article, it contains spoilers. Also, I'm very sorry for not putting images, but I don't have the time.
To begin with, I find that movie really good. Of course you can't compare it with Pocahontas 1, but how many sequels are actually better than the original movie? It's not only the animation/ plot/ characters that are much better, but also the feeling of nostalgia you get. When I really like one movie, I will definitely feel weird when I see its sequel, well, besides Shrek 2 maybe.
About the animation, it's quite good. Again, there is no point comparing it with the original but I like the scenery. I also believe that the animators do justice to Pocahontas' beauty. She has many bad shots but generally they have maintain her exotic and mysterious looks. Her hair especially is great and I love the way it flows so naturally. What's more, Nakoma looks stunning. Way better than in the original. John Rolfe is nicely drawn but I dislike John Smith, he doesn't look very handsome.
The songs aren't very good. I LOVE Where do I go from here, it's amazing and Pocahontas' voice is phenomenal as always. But the other songs are boring and dull.
Now I'll speak about the characters and their relationships. I love how they have maintained Pocahontas' indecisiveness, as well as her free spirit and her playfulness. Like in the original, Pocahontas at the very beginning appears to be the funny, playful and adventurous Pocahontas we had missed. But soon, we discover that many things have changed and for the rest of the movie, Pocahontas is wiser, more mature and serious, (besides during the song What a day in London, where she seems again curious, fun and outgoing) but, like in Pocahontas 1, she has to deal with very important issues so we can't say she looses her personality. Also, I like how she keeps asking Grandmother Willow for her advice.
About John Rolfe, I like him very much, I can't decide if I like him more than John Smith or not, but their completely different characters. John Rolfe is a gentleman, very elegant, gentle and courageous and while at the beginning he underestimates Poca, he changes his mind. He truly loves and respects her.
What I'm not satisfied with is John Smith. They have maintain its personality, he's still adventurous, funny and brave but he seems like he can't understand Pocahontas and he acted like a total jerk, he let her think he's dead!
I prefer how Governor Ratcliffe appears to be in Pocahontas 2, he's more evil, intelligent, cunning and manipulative and his actions make more sense, in Pocahontas 1, he didn't do many things imo.
Furthermore, I adore Queen Anne. She's gorgeous, calm, sweet, gentle and compassionate. She manages to calm down her husband and she influences him. She reminds me of Cinderella.
Another thing that I love about this movie is the relationship between Pocahontas and Nakoma. I love the scene where they roll in the snow and Pocahontas seems like she's having a lot of fun, while Nakoma is like "OMG PLEASE JUST STOP", they have kept their friendship the same, Poca is the crazy adventurer and Nakoma the voice of logic.
But what I really loved was the scene where they have to say goodbye. Nakoma is the only one Pocahontas hugs and she also speaks at her before she leaves, not even her father shared such an emotional scene with her before she leaves. They both look so sad and they actually CRY. That's the point where I tear up too... Remember, even when John Smith left, Pocahontas didn't cry. That scene was really heartbreaking to me, I don't know about you.
Now, about the relationship John Smith-Pocahontas-John Rolfe. The truth is that I realy like John Rolfe and Pocahontas together. They both love, appreciate and respect each other and I think Pocahontas will be much happier with him. I also like how unlike the other princesses, Poca didn't chose her first love, but the man that could truly make her happy and understand her, that's very realistic.
Unfortunately, realistic is not always good when it comes to Disney movies. The relationship that Pocahontas and John Smith had at the first movie was so strong, beautiful and passionate and the change that they made was too rushed. Suddenly, Pocahontas forgot about her first love. I understand that it had passed a lot of time since John Smith had died and it was natural for her to move on and fell in love with another man. But when she saw John Smith standing in front of her, alive, she didn't even run towards him to hug him, she didn't cry, nothing, I mean seriously? What about that lovely song If I never knew you, the ultimate sacrifice that Pocahontas made or him, she almost died to save him, her words "No matter what happens, I will always be with you forever". Suddenly, they made John Smith look like a jerk that shows off all the time, that disagrees with Pocahontas and can't understand her at all. And when they were separated, he just kissed her hand and she wished him good luck. WHAT HAPPENED?
To conclude, I liked Pocahontas 2 and how Poca chose a different ending for her story, even if she had to be separated with the man she loved, but the sequel actually cancelled the whole movie and that makes me very sad and kinda disappointed. I know this article is pointless, because I just can't decide whether I like the movie or not, but I really had to say these things.
