Watching Foreign Correspondent episode on oil fracking in Texas suburbs, how it can contaminate water supplies and affect health, among other environmental concerns...So apparently Dick Cheney worked for the oil giant Halliburton, which invented fracking. Guess what? Under the Bush Administration, oil fracking became exempt from the Safe Water Act. Meaning that oil pipes can be permitted to be built right next to water supplies.

I'll give the right one thing. It's not about contraception. But it's not about religious freedom, either. It's about people refusing to pay for something which they either don't agree with, or just don't want to pay for. You pay taxes, don't you? That stuff goes all over the place, and is bound to fund SOMETHING you don't like. Oh... wait, I forgot. We're talking about the church. I'm sorry, you're not used to giving alms, just taking them. So, if you're pro-life, I totally get it. You see it as protecting the rights of an unborn child, that makes sense, I may not always agree, but I get it. The mayor has enforced mandatory clean-up operations at Zuccotti park. Officers were instructed to remove squaters from the park, where protesters were residing, today. I hope this does not mean the end of 'Occupy Wall Street.' We need an organized civil disobedient movement now more than ever. We need 'OWS' protesters to be resilient, despite the uptick in resistance from officers. If not for them, who will speak up for US...because our local representatives certainly haven't been doing it.

Beleive me, compassion is not helpful. For two years I was bullied before I moved out of the school and for one of the years I was friendless, and with no backbone to support me. I would get into fights with others and I'm pretty sure I was almost unstable. Now I'm in 8th grade and things have changed. This kid in my class was SO annoying, and I still had anger issues and so much stress with putting on a happy face around people while really being sad, and before I knew it, i was bullying him. I never touched him, but I sure did insult the hell out of him. if it wasn't for him saying he could report me for bullying him, i wouldn't have even known I WAS bullying. over a year ago

Hi, thought i could help out :) Okay, so, Jesus is complex even for those who believe - the idea is that he was 100% human and 100% God... the best representation i've had shown to me so far is to get a ball of blue tack and seperate it. It's still part of the same blue tack, but seperate at the same time. God gave us Jesus to show us the light and the errors of our ways, also to show us how much he loves us - he rose on the third day after he was crucified. Jesus could have stepped off the cross at any moment, but chose to die, because that was 'his fate' and what God wanted. The whole concept of him sacrafising himself for us was to show that he would lay down his life for us to save our sins and give us life after death. I thought this was quite good for answering this question - link over a year ago

In most states, parents have a lot of rights. Corporal punishment (which includes whipping by belt) and aversive intervention (using "unpleasant stimuli" to deter certain behaviors) remain legal for parents. (Thank you, Issues of Abuse course, for this information). Teachers and other adults do not have this same right if it's not their own child. So here's MY question - do we give parents too much freedom when it comes to raising their children? Posted over a year ago
pandawinx commented…
Good question. well, yes. (at least, the way i see it.) i don't think it's cruel, but it is definatly hypocritical. If parents spank there own kids, but don't let anyone else, that's the ultimate hypocritical parent's. the law should apply to everyone, not should some. over a year ago
harold commented…
More seriously, no, I don't think parents have too much freedom when raising their children. In order to debate this effectively, you'd need to define "we". If "we" means "you and me", then no, we don't give parents too much freedom. It's neither your business nor mine to monitor how parents are raising their children, though clearly it has a more direct impact on the work that you do. We're both free to report child abuse when we suspect it, and CPS is usually pretty aggressive at separating the children from the parents during an investigation, regardless of the presence or absence of punishment and intervention in the law books. Personally, I feel that such behaviors should not be explicitly allowed or forbidden in state law; trying to define abuse pre-emptively in a legal document is doomed to failure. If "we" refers to a particular state, say which one you mean so we can discuss specifics. "Most states" is not specific enough to enable meaningful fact-based discussion. over a year ago
Cinders commented…
I did have more specific statistics in class, but I lost my notes. Let's just say the Southern states, which, if I recall, had the laxest laws. And that is what I meant when I said "we". In the "wall" section of fanpop, one must limit ones characters, which I thought would be beneficial for someone as verbose as me. I didn't want to give too much info, but it seems I gave not enough. CPS is very good at their jobs, but even when they seperate kids from families, inevitably the kid ends up back there in the end if there's no legal presidence. I am required by law to report suspicions of child abuse, but they have to be grounded suspicions. We're (and by "we" I now mean teachers) also encouraged to call and just talk with CPS confidentially before filing an official report if we aren't sure. But you have a valid point about legally defining it. "I don't know what it is, but I know it when I see it" comes to mind. over a year ago

theblondegirl commented…
hmm.. it depends on what is meant by "feminism" in this context. It feels like a lot of feminists (at least many that I know) seem to think that feminism is women being better than men and women having more rights than men do because they "owe" it to us after the hundreds of years of unequality. I think that's wrong, and that's why I have not yet joined any feminist clubs. I'd rather join a gender-equality spot :) over a year ago
pandawinx commented…
Oh, i don't think women are any better than men. The original meaning of feminism came after the second world war, when they sent women to work. After going from working to back in the house again, women got a desire to do the same jobs men do. And TA-DA!!! feminism was created, unfortantly the word has been twisted a lot, women who think they're better than men, aren't actually feminists. they are myscoginists. Not all "feminists" hate men ;) over a year ago

Women already did man jobs during WWI and during that time were fighting for the right to vote. WWII was a great impact, but women fighting for their rights happened before that. over a year ago

Not as widely spread, however, a lot of women at that time were happy just getting married, having lots of mini mes and house keeping. which i don't have a problem with, just saying, not as many women rebelled, like you said, i think WW2 was one of the biggest impacts on feminism and how it began, plus probably one of the most famous. over a year ago

Be honest, have you ever once been pretty radical about a controversial topic and then changed your mind? If so what was it, and what made you change your mind?

Well, I used to be pro death penalty, but after debating it for a while with my dad, I saw that he had a point and changed my mind. My main argument for death penalty was that the person might be able to escape from jail, but my dad said that that was incredibly unlikely, so now I'm against. over a year ago

Something to think about: Anyone find it ironic that pro-choice is known as pro-choice when the embyro doesn't have a choice, and pro-life is called pro-life when some women who don't have the right to a abortion die giving birth? Republicans are trying to redefine rape. They want to change it so that it's only rape if 'physical harm' has been done to the woman. I've always thought that these people were crazy, but this has just crossed the line for me. Posted over a year ago
sapherequeen commented…
And that is just bullshit. Oh, physical harm is the only thing that matters! Who gives a flying fuck about the girl who lost all trust in people, is in the fetal position in her bedroom weeping hysterically, has just been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or another horrible medical condition, or at this very moment, is falling to her death after purposely jumping out of a window? Nah, those effects don't mean a thing. over a year ago

I never said it was a good idea, I just didn't want people to get distracted about "redefining rape" and miss the issue. over a year ago
theblondegirl commented…
If this is true, it sounds like the talk of people who know nothing about rape. I think most cases of rapes are not committed forcebly, but rather in an emotionally oppressing situation where the victim complies out of fear of being hurt. It's ridiculous to assume that the sexual act has been committed against somebody's will only if they've been beat up. This kind of a law would also make it easier for rapists to get away with raping others, as long as they are careful not to leave marks. over a year ago

The so-called "facebook campaigns" against breast cancer (IE Where do you like your handbag/What color is your bra) - Are these helping the cause, hurting the cause, or making no difference at all? Posted over a year ago
Sappp commented…
I think it helps. It makes people curious, they will look further and any woman that knows a little bit more about breast cancer might discover it earlier (I remember one of the campaigns here convinced me to check my breast regurlary and I also told friends they should do it) over a year ago
Cinders commented…
But these memes have nothing to do with breast cancer. I could easily claim it's to promote awareness of ovarian cancer, or purse thefts. over a year ago
XDRoseLuvsHP commented…
I think yes and no. Yes, it is making a difference in the way Sappp described; it makes people curious, and makes people want to know what's going on, and that lets people learn about it. But at the same time, I agree with Cinders, katiecain and susanslover as well. While it may help raise awareness, it doesn't really do much for the cause itself. Most people already know about breast cancer, so when they find out, a lot of people will probably be just like, "Oh. Cool." and move on with their lives. So it is good that it is spreading awareness, even if it's just a little bit, but we need to do something more significant in order to really make a significant difference. over a year ago
