Trump has promised "one of the greatest military buildups in American history", seeking to increase spending by $54 billion per year. He said of the proposal:
"This is a landmark event and message to the world in these dangerous times, of American strength, security and resolve. We must ensure that our courageous servicemen and women have the tools they need to deter war and when called upon to fight in our name, only do one thing: Win."
The increase in spending is to be partly funded by cuts to State Department programs, the EPA, diplomacy efforts and other non-military spending. Critics say that it is an unusual move given that the country is not engaged in a major war, with 120 retired US generals and admirals condemning the concurrent slashes to diplomacy programs.
The problem with military spending is that it can never really be cut, for fear of appearing weak. So however much it goes up this year, it'll have to go up even mooore next time. Pump yer brakes, Trumpy.
I remember watching Trump's February 16th conference and hearing him say that he was going to spend money on giving the military better and more modern weapons and I remember thinking "Why in the Hell would we do that??" We're already spending 601 BILLION US dollars on the military, which is more than the next 7 highest military costs in other countries countries combined! We could be using that 54 billion dollars for so much more than bigger guns and bombs. Who is he trying to impress?
The other day I had to ask myself what in the sweet fuck does America spend its taxpayer money on, because it seems like fuck all except things that can 'splode people. I can't believe how much is spent on the military already, so adding more is just appalling.
We spend enough on that shit. How about the education department? NASA? Environmental protection? All of those cracked up roads that cause flat tires? Literally anything else. I get it military is important we should place some money there, but we need more balance. Because there are other aspects that are just as valuable.
^Lol, education/science/environmental programs are exactly where they're taking the money from. Such intelligence, such good planning, all hail our wise leader.
^^Lel. I sorta get why Americans are angsty about paying taxes. I would too if half my tax money went towards 'sploding brown people and antagonising China.
Edit: meant "half" as hyperbole but I looked it up and it's legit half. Military spending accounts for 54% of all federal discretionary spending.
@Dasm "The problem with military spending is that it can never really be cut, for fear of appearing weak". Yeah true. Urgh.
