First off the host's (summoner) boss in the area must be alive, second the level difference between the players must meet this equation (Sl is 10% + (+/- 10 Sl) so let's say your 44. 10% is 4, plus 10 Sl = 14 sl. So you can summon help within this sl range 30 - 58. 14 above or below your current level. Also, the final requirement for summoning is you must be human which uses up humanity at a bonfire. Keep in mind I have an answered question for those who might think you can only summon or be summoned by random people. While the latter of the two can happen you can choose whether or not to help them. That's what the Black Crystals for.
