First off, she liked Damon best so we can validly say that he's kind of the leading man in her mind. Lots of TVD fans hated that Stefan saved Matt before Elena in 3x22, arguing it was stupid, unrealistic, unreasonable etc. Paul himself didn't like it, but was told that it's not physically possible for Stefan to save 2 people at once, and that it falls in line with how he's respected Elena's decisions. I was thinking about why I loved Delena more than Stelena and I realized that a big factor was what Damon says to Elena, like "I will always choose you." Not only does it make my heart flutter and my breath to catch but it's something Stefan could never even say to Elena.
