The writers don't get it. No strain in the Delena relationship could possibly be larger than them. What Damon and Elena have with each other is not the result of Elena's choice in 4x23. It's what's been simmering since the very beginning of the show. They didn't get to choose each other because the universe doesn't let people choose. That said, if the universe DID, they'd choose each other in a heartbeat. Elena is better than switching boys for no good reason.
