Many people with pets that do not have trailers are forced to make specific arrangements for their animals. Having a trailer means you can bring your pet with you. I put together this guide for pet owners that also like to camp. Most of these experiences are based off of my own dog, a Golden. Your pet will likely act differently.
PACKING
You should have a place for your dog to sleep. Your dog would prefer something with a familiar scent. However, the dog will eventually know the scent of its camping bed.
Parcel out each of your dog's meals. My family puts each mealin a separate bag. This makes it much easier at mealtimes. Be sure to keep the same eating schedule that yoyu have at home.
Pack both food and water dishes. While you're camping, they should be kept in an out-of-the-way corner of the trailer. Each time you go camping, place the dog's dishes in the same place. Your dog will learn that that is where the dishes will always be.
For the first few trips, pack toys with your dog's scent on them. Your dog will feel much more at home if he is surrounded by familiar scents. Later, you can buy separate toys for your dog to have camping.
TRAVELING
Keep your dog restrained while in the tow vehicle. You can use whatever form of restraint you normally use.
Be sure to make pit stops. Young puppies have to go more often than adult dogs. Know your dog's bathroom schedule and plan for it.
AT THE CAMPGROUND
Once you arrive, walk your dog. She may still have to go, even if you stopped a little bit ago. Don't worry if she doesn't poop right away. Once she is settled in, it will come. The timing varies with the dog.
I think that's about everything. I wrote this in general. You should make sure your dog has all his medicines and is vaccinated for any diseases that you may encounter. Aside from that, talk to your dog's vet and the campground for any other concerns you may have.
