My reasoning is the same as Anya's - it was solace. Both were the wronged parties and it was just a girl and a boy finding comfort with one another (please forgive my almost Notting Hill quote, the Duplicity thing is in the corner so I have Julia Roberts right there). Xander walked away from Anya, Buffy broke it off with Spike and their moment was just that, a moment where they both feel needed to give comfort to somebody else, that they matter and are wanted. It wasn't a shag or a way to get back at somebody (I keep typing boyd instead of body, think I want to do Dollhouse?), it was just comfort.
I'd like to bring up the Parker 'Incident' (like the Pineapple Incident, except it lacked in the funnies and Winnie Cooperness), that was a similiar case where Buffy wanted to move on and feel sexy and wanted and it blew up on her. Sometimes it's not our heads that need to know we are in the right or that we can keep treading water. Sometimes it's our hearts that need the comfort of a kiss to cease their silent cries.
I agree with jessica101. Buffy unrightfully was angered over seeing them together when she'd dumped him in the first place. Her attitude really annoyed me.
