This is answered on the DVD commentaries but I don't expect everyone to have as much time on their hands as me to watch them! Vampires in the Buffyverse 'simulate' breathing, they don't actually ingest oxygen but it DOES go in and out of their bodies so to speak. The bit in Surprise where Angel inhales smoke after biting the hooker is so cool.

Gotta agree on the First torturing Spike comment though, that annoyed the hell outta me when I saw it.

don't have the DVD commentary to watch but i don't really except that as an explanation if it "dies inside them" btw oxygen isn't living therefore it can not die, so would other gases hense no piont in smoking

i think Joss has just purely made a mistake like when in 2x3 school hard and spike said that angel was his sire where as in angel it's drusilla and Joss said it was like a family line or something he's not serious trying to say that they have a family system like grandsire and halfsire lol i think that was a mistake that he later tried to rectify by having dru call darla grandma which was just weird!
