Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie \'Seemed Happy\' During Last Family Outings Together Before Split

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie showed no signs of trouble during their last few outings together in the months leading up to their split.

The former couple spent a lot of time apart during the last months of their marriage, which hinted at trouble, but in their last public outings they didn\'t betray any signs of a crumbling marriage.

"They seemed happy and got along great," a source tells PEOPLE of spotting them out together.

Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, made an effort to spend time with their children while they were both home in Los Angeles in July, running errands together as a family on numerous occasions. On July 4, they were spotted at a local supermarket shopping for a BBQ grill before their holiday festivities.

"Brad and Angie were great. They seemed very happy and chatty," an onlooker tells PEOPLE, adding that their children Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne tagged along. "They had a disagreement and Brad lectured them on how to behave in public. Brad often comes in with his kids and seems like a great dad."

Less than a week later, the duo made a stop inside a Jamba Juice with their daughter Shiloh, where a source tells PEOPLE "they were very cuddly."

"Brad kept hugging Angie from behind. It was on the earlier side, so it was obvious that they were having a good morning," adds the source. "They looked very happy. They were both very polite and sweet."

Jolie and Pitt also kept a united front while celebrating Vivienne and Knox\'s 8th birthday. The then-couple took their two youngest for an intimate breakfast celebration. And while the kids snacked on festive pancakes, Jolie and Pitt once again showed light PDA.

"They were low-key and seemed like a normal family," says an onlooker. "Brad ordered for the table and was super friendly. Angie didn\'t speak much. They all shared the food. Brad and Angie seemed happy and got along great. They laughed and were even toe flirting under the table."

After breakfast, the family made a stop at a Rite Aid pharmacy store where they "walked around for a while and picked up stuff that regular people do."

The onlooker says "Brad and Angie were both very friendly" and even signed a few autographs on their way out.

Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split and asking for physical custody of the couple\'s shared six children.

But a source tells PEOPLE Pitt will not likely accept sole custody, as "sole custody for either of them doesn\'t seem like what\'s best for the children."

In a statement released to PEOPLE following Jolie\'s filing, Pitt said his focus is on the "well-being of our kids."

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," he said in the statement. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Jolie also released a statement addressing the divorce: "This decision was made for the health of the family," the actress\' attorney said. "She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time."
