It should be optional I think in case someone wants to learn about God but cant afford to go to a Christian schoool.

I don't think it should be taught, because there a LOT of religions, and religious teachers are probably on favour of their religion, so they'll teach as though theirs is the "right religion". And there are people who don't believe in God at all, so they probably wouldn't want to learn about religion.
But mostly, I think teaching religion influences children to become part of the religion that's being taught, which I don't think is right. Children should learn about religions alone, so they can make their own choices, instead of having others' beliefs crammed down their throats.

There is no need to push it down people's throats.

I think learning more about other religions would be interesting.
However, shoving a religion's morals and practices down someone's throat is wrong in my opinion.

Well it depends. If the Religion teacher is a nun then NO because it would be toobiased for young kids, butif the teacher isn't really super religious nutty then yes.

If there was a class where you could learn about all of the religions in the world objectively, I would be fine with that. It would be like a social studies class.

But people today would take it too far. They would escalate to a preachy class that would only focus on one religion. People would start feeling left out and like it was being shoved down their throats. Even if the teachers have the class and the lessons under control to include everyone, some students will always take it too far.

I think it should be, without being biased. People need to be aware and respect others' religions. For example, in the first year of middle school we studied several religions, without the teacher sharing her opinion.
Private school however is a different story. This is coming from a Christian, if you really want to know

^ We did the same thing in middle school! It was so interesting. We got split up into groups who each had a religion to focus on, and then we each presented a PowerPoint when we were done. Our group got Zoroastrianism.

One thing I really remember from that project, though, was when the team with Jehovah's Witness presented theirs, and they basically crapped on the religion along with other members of the class the whole time. It hurt because one of my best friends was a Jehovah's Witness and they were acting like all of the people in that religion were crazy. Maybe it's because I live in redneck-ville and most everyone here is ignorant, haha, but that's why I don't think a whole class on religion would work.

That's what CCD is for, guys. It already is optional, it's just not taught in the schools. There's no reason to learn about religion in public school. I'm pretty sure that's why half the kids are sent to public school.

Okay, here's the system in Australia.

Basically like once a week, our school dedicates half a period to Religious Studies, and everyone breaks off into their repective religious groups in like a classroom or whatever. NSW education law states that no regular classes whatsoever are allowed to go on during this half-period, so people like me with obscure/no religions just... chill. xD So yeah, RELIGION! Just so I can slack off in peace.
