Ted's mom is shown just like Robin. She and Ted's dad got divorced and Robin and Ted broke up, because of the same reason, they wanted different things.
And after that Virginia started dating Clint and Robin started dating Barney. And at the end both couples got married.

Cobie: I'm excited to see her in a relationship and finally settle down … into something [laughs]. Committing to somebody is a huge step for her. She tried with Kevin earlier this year and it didn't work out. But our creators have actually thought about everything and that relationship was very much needed in order to get Robin to where she's headed.

Sorry to post on here AGAIN...but I got into a major ship war today! I went to lunch with 4 of my friends. 3 of us were HIMYM fans and three of us were not.
