How did Oogie, Tenzin's flying bison come about?

Oogie appeared in the first episode of Legend of Korra. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Appa was supposedly the last flying bison. I have heard that over the years, Aang and his friends found a hidden colony of flying bison, but I'm not sure how true this is. Help
