Are you talking about a family situation? I guess it is important to be honest about your beliefs, but if they are at odds with the people around you then it can be very difficult. But I do think that breaking it to them gently is a good option.

I agree with misanthrope though. You know, it's not that important in the grand scheme of things, really. I don't think you should lie to people, but there's no reason to go out of your way to declare yourself an atheist and make everyone else uncomfortable.

I myself don't bring up my atheism with most people (I don't want them to try to convert me), or religion in general for that matter. But if someone asks me, I will tell them straightforwardly that I don't believe in God.

i mean maybe you should try exploring Christianity a little further? you`re presented w. scientific facts everyday but i doubt you are presented with religious that often . but if you`re 100% sure, tell the truth & stand up for what you believe in! (but don`t try to force it on other people)

I know that this isn't the point of this pick, but I disagree Lila856. From my experience, religion is everywhere in everyday social life. Religion is everywhere in the way we speak and interact with each other, which is why I think it can be quite difficult to talk to religious friends about what we really believe in.
And atheism is not necessarily about "scientific facts", at least not in my view.

I am an athiest but I still think I'm a good person. I don't see how anyone would have a problem or get upset by it. I was brought up with Christianity but everyone I know accepts the fact that I no longer believe in it.

i think it depends where you grew up with i think misanthrope i am always having fact stastics and jokes at religious followers expenspense shoved down my throat, mainly because i don't know many figure that are religious or at least openly express and share there views over here
visited ireland and everything was different even down to people saying lord bless you instead of just bless you

true my advice on that would be once you fully know what your believes are then i think the best way to do it to just say it, it may be a bit of a shock to them but if you beat around the bush they might think your unsure and try and change you back to their faith

first of all, learn to type properly. second of all, if you are around poeple who cannot accept your religious views (namely can't accept any other religion than their own), then simply tell them that it goes both ways "i'll accept you if you accept me".

I told my mom, and she freaked out. My dad is fine with it, but they both think that because I'm young it's just some stage that I'll grow out of. I just told everyone. Some people were asking me to go to Switch (a church thing where teens go and play stupid religious games and stuff) and I said it bluntly-"I'm an Atheist-I don't believe in God." they then asked me a bunch of questions like "What's that" and "How to you think we landed up here?" (my answer to that was telling them about sex xD You should have seen their faces!) or "Where do you think you go when you die?" all these stupid questions that even my teachers asked me when it was time for prayers (there's a few very religious teachers).

That's what I did. A lot of people judged me, but I turned out not to really care. It's what you think, not what other people do. Even family, gently or roughly, you'll tell them one way or the other, if you want to tell them. So just go for it however you think is right.

Just tell them the truth. Sure, you might be judged and ridiculed, but think about this:
"If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said"
