Anime Question

is ova a new beggining and ending of an anime or is it a continuation?

can you plzz help me, i know what it stands for but i was watching an anime and it finished. then there was another episode and it had ova in it so i got confused. so basically there a 12 episodes and then there was a 13 but said ova
