Anime Question

Anime or manga you think has the wrong target audience

Once in awhile you'll come across a series with a shounen or shoujo label where half or more of the fans are the opposite of the target gender, & after watching or reading it, you're thinking "are you freaking kidding me? How can this demographic be right?"

Gokusen: It's Jousei, aimed at older women, & it's damn funny, but I can totally see this being really popular with men. You can watch it back to back with Sukigake Kuromatei Gakuen (Cramortie High) & GTO. (The J-drama sucks, but women seem to like it).

Gensoumaden Saiyuki: The first anime I've ever known to smartly change it's demographic from Shounen to Jousei. Guys have told me that despite the amount of bare breasts in season 1, it's overtly homoerotic.

Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler: Somehow this is in a shounen manga. The mangaka has a history of writing yaoi & Syota/shotacon mangas & doesn't hide that fact very well. In fact, each story arc in the manga, you can tell she's not even trying to appeal to male fans anymore. The 2ed live musical & 2ed season of the anime back this sentiment up.

Slayers: One of the best dubbed anime series I've ever seen & just as good in Japanese. This is the most girl-power shounen series ever; even having a bitchy flat-chested protagonist with pants who can blow up entire cities. You don't think of it much, but pants are pretty rare on women in anime.

Axis Powers Hetalia: This is seinen? It's one big gay joke. I don't know of any male fans.

Drug & Drop: Originally titled "Gouho Drug" or "Legal Drug," this CLAMP series used to be shoujo & switched to a seinen magazine, despite it not toning down the homoerotic undertones one ounce, & that kind of thing appeals more to women.

Petshop of Horrors: Targeted at women in Japan, & you bet it's got female fans, but this is one men shouldn't pass up if you love a good Horror Mystery. It's the goriest shoujo title I've ever seen.

(Incidentally, if you know of any other incredibly slashy shounen series or shoujo series

yea actually, it kinda bugs me that some anime have kinda gotten labeled or stigmatized to be for a certain gender.
Hetalia: Axis Powers is one, an ok I am guilty of being a fan Gerita BUT the series itself is entertaining, funny and interesting, its meant for all genders but because of the shipping done by (mostly) female fans guys tend to think of it as a girly anime when in fact its just about historical events done in a humorous way.

Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) *sigh* i don't even want to get started on the anime, lets just say it completely ruins it for getting any guy to read the manga, which by the way is pretty much NOTHING like the anime series. Altho i do like the second season of the series

Kuroko no Basket, is another that has more of a female fan base an granted, the guys are good looking, its about the sport of basketball, plays, strategies, an teamwork. Its an awesome anime, fast paced and smart. Im not much of a sports fan but i found it to be really entertaining. Any guy who likes basketball would love this series.
