This monologue is in the perspective of a wolf. This can be taken as either some hunter paranoia taken too far, or something more.
See that hill in the distance? The one with lush, green forests, large herds and plenty of water.
Every night, I dream of running away over there. Those dreams, all too often, are forgotten through the violence.
Too often, pup, we end up getting into a fight. Sometimes its over food, land, mates. Other times, its over words.
You know who did this? Man. Man tore our pack apart. Man killed us for no reason.
If you’re a good, smart pup, you’ll stay away from them.
I got involved in some of them fights, did you know that? Let me show you this big scar on my throat, I did that to myself. I wanted to see an end to it all. These fights cost us some good wolves. They all were either killed or chased away. I lost good friends to the violence. Now, we’re down to nothing but a large hunting party.
There is also psychological violence. One time, one of the wolves had a nervous breakdown ranting on about the fights. But, the fighters don't care.
Do y’all hear talk about that hill? I hear it’s a fine place. Paradise for wolves. A wide variety of trees, herbs and bushes. Lots of deer, elk and small critters.
Every night, she calls to me, her voice ringing through my head. I long to see her, and I know she longs to see me.
So pup, what do you say we make a break?
