i really dont remember..but then again it was probably early.
i am a makeup artist now so bear with me when i get all preachy.
1) start with a good skincare routine- wash and moisturize the face daily esp at night and remove all makeup before sleeping. flaky patchy skin and makeup dont go together.
2) invest in a few good basics or ask for them for your bday. get two proper medium sized brushes. real hair! they will last you at least 10 years if you occasionally wash them with a mild shampoo. use those for powder and one for blush. just DONT even bother with the plastic shit and keep them clean!
3) you can pluck your eyebrows a little but only ON THE BOTTOM and NOT TOO MUCH. i can not tell you enough how important that is. people start plucking and then get carried away and end up looking silly...dont overdo it EVAR oooooor..the eyebrow elf will eat your family!
4) to start i would use some concealer where needed (spots/under eyes) and always dust off with powder to seal. people are shy aboot using powder cause they think it will look like a mask. it is vital to "seal" the concealer though cause..oh screw it just trust me! use translucent powder and not too much!
use some blush dont be shy aboot really buying a bright red or pink..you just dont need to apply a lot. it will look much fresher than a tawny brownish colour most people buy. use some mascara..you can start by only doing the top lashes or use brown instead of black for a more natural look.theeeeeen you can read my article on eyeliners and i suggest you try the "eyeshadow version"

for beginners lip glosses are a good way to experiment a little with colour. they are sheer and not too overpowering even when they look really bright in the packaging- once applied they will always look pretty natural. also nail polish is something you can try where you can try bolder colours and see what you like.
i would invest in a good concealer and powder cause those are on your skin all day. and the brushes SAY IT WITH ME: I WILL NOT BUY A CHEAP POWDER BRUSH!
the glosses and shadows can be cheap drugstore stuff cause its more fun when you can experiment a little and youll only be using a bit anyway.
also- and people never do this- practise! try to apply some makeup on a sunday or whenever..just see what you like/what works. you can always wash it off and as bobbi brown says: its not brainsurgery!
for some more ideas you can also search youtube. tons of girls (and guys) post makeup tutorials. they arent always right on what they say and sometimes do things that seem dangerously close to them losing an eye soon BUT its good for getting inspiration
