Zutara cross over

Okay am I the only one who thought the end of A:TLA contradicted everything they said earlier? So Aang has to give up Katara, but instead he runs after her and blocked his Avatar chakra. But magically in the end he managed to control the avatar state and get the girl?
What also gets to me, in the last season, they set up Zutara for them to fail, I mean if you know anything about movie making you CANNOT bash a couple you do not like, no matter what. It was Kataang or Zutara the entire time. The best part of it all is they tried to crush the Zutara spirit but they couldn't!

Aang, Zuko, and i were in the courtyard. i sat on the steps while Zuko taught Aang something new. "There's one techniche you need to leard before facing my father," Zuko said. "How to re-direct lightning. If you let the energy in your own body flow, the lightning will follow it. You turn your apponents energy against them." Aang lit up. "That's like waterbending!" he said. Zuko nodded. "Exacly. My uncle learned this technique himself by studying waterbenders."
"So...have you re-directed lightning before?" Aang asked.
"Once. Against my father," Zuko said.
"What did it feel like?"
