(Near's view)

I sit at a desk, one among a sea of students, as we wait for our test results. The room is a flurry of movement. Tapping feet, biting nails, doodling, and then there's me. Near, the unintentional number one. I sigh at the thought, but at the same time I smile to myself. I might actually be L's successor after all...

The room goes completely still as the door creaks open. Rodger walks into the room, a stack of graded papers towering in his hands. Each step he takes echoes in the silence. It's so quiet I can even hear the paper rustling as it is passed out.

As soon as I see my score I am conflicted. I glance over my shoulder, trying to be as quick about it as possible, but he sees it anyway. I'm sure of it.

Mello, number two at the Wammy House, the orphanage for geniuses, stares at me when he thinks that my back is turned. I bet he's wondering what my score is.

'Come to think of it, I kinda wonder what Mello got...'

Rodger dismisses us. I stand and make my way towards the front of the classroom. Out of the corner of my eye I see Matt, number three, heading towards Mello. I should get out of here as soon as possible.

Rodger offers me a smile as I pass him.

‘I may as well head to the common room. I feel an impending urge to continue my puzzle' I think idly as I walk.

I have nearly reached the commons when I hear the distinct sound of footsteps behind me, approaching fast. I breathe slowly to calm myself. I cannot let this alarm me.

"Near!" I place the voice instantly, glancing over my shoulder to check. Mello storms towards me, a scowl on his face. His blond hair stands out against his black shirt and pants, precisely the opposite of my white outfit.

"Yes, Mello?" I ask him tonelessly. His scowl deepens.

"How do you always get a perfect score?!" He growls, his royal blue eyes blazing. I sigh inwardly. This almost always happens. Even though Mello studies relentlessly in preparation for every test, I consistently manage to score a perfect, and him 1-4 points below me.

"Honestly, Mello..." I sigh before turning and walking away, leaving him enraged in the hallway.

I pass the door to the common room, but I decided that I am not going to go there after all. Instead, I head towards the library. There's this one book that I am in the middle of reading on the principles of human nature. After that... I'll go to the commons.

‘fwip.’

I turn the page of Principles of Human Nature and am greeted by an interesting chapter title. "Friends from enemies". Immediately my thoughts turn to Mello. He isn't exactly my enemy, but I am his enemy apparently. I never wanted it to be that way.
Now intent on it, I delve into the words...

Many hours later, I walk towards my room with weary feet, book still in hand. I can barely keep my eyes open, but I did get through half of the chapter. Maybe I can finally end this one-sided rivalry between Mello and I. But I must admit; some of those methods are truly absurd!

I stop suddenly when I realize where I am. Gazing at Mello’s door, I feel a surprising urge to enter. I could possibly try that one method, the one that uses constant contact and presence to get close to the individual…

I shake my head. What am I thinking? Besides, he probably isn’t there anyways. Scolding myself, I continue towards my room.

(Mello)

I watch as the distinctive white-clothed figure moves away and I can’t help wondering why Near was around my room. I mean, his room is a short walk from here, but why did he pause and stare?

Whatever. I need to prepare for the next test anyways. I can’t lose to Near again!

My door closes softly behind me. The room is a mess, there are papers and books everywhere, and I forgot to make my bed this morning, but I guess that it reflects my personality in a way.

I open the textbook to the subject that we are due to study next, reading intently, doing practice problems for each individual topic; I even complete a practice test just in case. Near will not beat me on the next test!

I hear a knock on my door.

“Who is it?” I call out to them.

The door clicks open and Matt pokes his head in, a smile on his face. “Just me, Mello. I was wondering if you wanted to play…”

“Sure, come on in.” Matt sets a board game on the floor and I slip out of the chair. He flashes me a shy smile.

“Thanks for doing this so often, Mello. It’s just that all the games these days are way too easy! I’ve already beat my new one 4 times!”
I stare at him dubiously.

“No way. Wasn’t that game supposed to be unbeatable or something?” All I really knew about the game was that it was one of the biggest things to hit the stores, that it was a long RPG game and that it was an extremely difficult game. But then, I shouldn’t be surprised. Matt is a total gamer.

“Yeah. It was so simple! The key was in the beginning. According to the map, the way to go was into the forest, where the treasure was, and then the game appeared to progress from there until you inevitably die from something, be it natural disaster or super hard boss. But if you decided to go into the desert instead, and managed to survive, then you would reach the final boss and beat the game.

“But, this was so tricky because to get into the desert you need to have a full health bar or else you won’t survive the fall down the cliff, and they lay out the forest scenario so well that it tricks you into thinking if you can just go the other way, or become stronger, you will be able to beat the game…”

Matt trails off as his mind becomes preoccupied with setting up the game. My eyes drift back to the desk, where I could be studying right now. Matt notices.

“Hey, you shouldn’t feel bad that you did
worse than Near.” I shoot a mild glare at him.

“Sorry, but it’s true. I mean, you may have gotten two points less than him, but I got seven points less than you! Do you even know how much all of the kids here look up to you?”

“Shut up, Matt.” I growl venomously.

Something sparks in Matt’s sapphire eyes, but it is gone in an instant. He knows his place.

“Sorry.” He mutters, looking down at the game board again.

“Matt,” I start, evening out my voice, “You of all people should know how much I hate Near. I cannot just bow down and accept being worse than him! I have to be L’s successor!” Without it being my intent, my voice rose until I was yelling. Matt looks back up at me, cringing slightly.

“Mello, if you don’t want one of the teachers in your room, you should lower your voice.” He has an edge to his voice that tells me immediately he is serious. I soften my tone.

“Anyways, I can’t back down and let Near win. I’ll go first.”

The dice clack as they hit the game board.

When I finally look away from the game it’s dark outside, almost completely black. Matt must be having the same thoughts, because he pockets the dice and stacks the cards.

(Matt)

“G’night Mello.” I say as I close the door to his room. But I am not leaving. Not yet.

I watch the crack under the door carefully until the light goes off. I count the seconds, eventually reaching six hundred.

The metal door handle feels cold on my skin, and it makes a considerable click when I turn it. I freeze when the door creaks, praying that he fell asleep already…

…and to my relief his room is completely still.

His textbook still lies open on the desk where he left it, and he hasn’t cleaned his room in ages, so I have to step carefully to avoid crunching paper.

I slowly lower myself onto the bed, struggling to calm my racing heart.

‘You’ve been planning this, Matt. Go through with it!’ the braver part of my mind cheers, but the more cautious side attempts to talk sense into me.

‘If Mello wakes up, you are going to be in some serious trouble. Maybe even sent down to the hospital wing.’

‘But it’s now or never. Another chance like this may not come.’

Moving as fast as I dare, I lean down until there are only inches between Mello’s and my face. I notice how his sleeping face lacks the constant tension he shows when he is awake.

My lips brush his, which are still sweet from the chocolate bar he was just eating. I only allow the kiss to last for a few seconds. My heart races in my chest uncontrollably, for I am still terrified that he is going to wake up.

I step towards the door.

“…no…”

My head whips around at the soft plea. Mello rolls over and sighs.

“…my chocolate…”

My breath comes out in a rush as I try to suppress a giggle, and I get out of Mello’s room as fast as I can.

After I close the door with a soft thump, I run my fingers over my lips, where I can still faintly taste chocolate, and I smile to myself.

I can’t let Near have all of Mello’s attention, after all, even if it is negative.
