Chapter 6

Kassie’s mind rushed over a million things. She knew she was going to get hurt. She looked up and found Kyan’s face. How could it feel like everything was in slow motion? She was falling off a cliff. Kyan’s face looked down at her in horror, his arm still outstretched as if to catch her. Kassie blinked once, and she was in the water. She was underwater, trying to see through the darkness. The lake was deep here,. She swam toward what she hoped was the surface. It got darker and darker. She tried to tell herself to turn around and go the other direction, but her brain was going into a oxygen craving frenzy. She turned her head one way as something else entered the water. The white bubbles rose around her and a iron strong arm wrapped around her. Kyan. Her mind whispered the word like a caress. He had come to try and save her. But why was he pulling her the wrong way? She struggled against his grip. His grip tightened, and she was being pulled. Her lungs felt like they were going to burst. She couldn’t hold her breath any longer. She gasped, and water rushed in through her nose and mouth. And suddenly her head was above water. She tried to breathe, but the water was already in. Kyan swam strongly toward the closest possible shore, pulling Kassie behind him. Kassie saw black spots in front of her eyes. She still couldn’t breathe. Kyan reached the shore and carried her up. Kassie felt like she was floating above herself, watching this happen like it was happening to someone else. Kyan laid her gently down on the shore. Kassie floated above him.
“ Kass! Come on! Stay with me!” He cried, sounding upset for the first time. He pressed his hands together and pumped her chest.
Kassie was suddenly no longer floating. She was back in her own body. She couldn’t see anything. Just surrounded by blackness.
“ Kassandra. You better stick with me. Come on, baby.” Kyan’s voice filtered through the hazy darkness swamping Kassie’s head. She felt numb all over, until suddenly, she felt Kyan’s hands pumping her chest. She choked and felt water coming back up her throat. She gagged and sat up, coughing the water out. Her vision came back in slow intervals, until finally she could see Kyan, crouching beside her, looking better than ever. His dark hair was wet and wild looking. His crystal blue eyes looked into hers with a kind of crazed passion.
“ Oh thank you.” He breathed and suddenly, Kassie was swept up again his chest, his chin resting on the top of her head.
“ I’m so sorry, Kass.” He murmured. Kassie managed to smile to herself.
“ I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have gotten mad about you kissing that other girl. You can kiss who ever you want to.” Kassie blurted without thinking. She mentally kicked herself for saying that. Well, maybe almost drowning really did mess up your mind.
“That’s what you were mad about?” Kyan asked in surprise.
“ Yeah.” Kassie almost whispered.
“ Oh Kass! Next time just let me explain before you almost drown yourself.”
Kyan laughed gently into her hair.
Kassie pulled back, taking him in. His shirt was wet and stuck to his muscular body. His eyes were more normal looking, shining with happiness.
“ Thank you for saving me.” Kassie grinned at him.
“ Oh its my pleasure.” Kyan smiled back and cupped her face with one hand. Kassie didn’t know if he moved, or she did, but suddenly his lips were on hers and she ran her hands up his arms and looped them around his neck. His lips were warm on her mouth, gently moving. Kassie ran her hand up into his hair. Suddenly a branch snapped. Kassie jumped as a voice growled behind her.
“ What’s going on here?”
