That's not true.
Okay, look. EMO stands for EMOTIONAL. Emotion = pain. (Well, the way I look at it anyways.) But anyways, there were always "emo" stories written. I mean, look at Cut by Patrica McCormick. The book is based on a girl who cuts herself and needs to get help. (As people assume, cutting yourself is something an "emo" or emotional! person would do although that is not always the case.) Other types of "emo" is depression- I could name thousands of books with depression as the plot but I will just name one of the most popular books of all time- Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. A girl is raped and she learns how to keep quiet after that and she must learn to speak up for herself before it's too late.....
Okay, I'm getting off track here. I think the problem with this question is that you're defining "emo" as most people would, it's typical. People stereotype emotional people as "emo" and so now people think that people now all of a sudden when they see a depressed person or someone who has cuts on their arm (although they could possibly just be their cat scratches!)they should call them "emo"! This has gotten way out of hand- nobody even stops to consider that maybe this person just had a person die in their family and they're really sad right now, and they're a cheerleader! Happiest and sluttiest girl of the bunch- getting called an "emo"! This is just all wrong!
Okay, I'm getting off track here, dammit. I'll get it right this time. Okay, basically there is no such thing as an "emo", it's just a nickname for "emotional." There are many different attributes to being "emo". Cutting, depression, suicide, eating disorders, really any kind of self-injury and many more. These stories have been around for hundreds- if not thousands of years! They're just getting more popular now because some shitheads decided that we're supposed to call emotional people "emos" instead of "emotional." And not only that but it's become some kind of cultural thing where everywhere I turn there's always someone claiming to be "emo" although they ain't even depressed or anything! They just consider themselves to be that because the clothes they wear are similar to the ways that "emos" dress. And because of that and because it has gotten so popular, people are now writing more and more stories that have to do with "emo" things and cutting and whatnot. But like I said, they have been around for hundreds of years, they're just getting more popular because now people are actually starting to notice depressed people, before they didn't really I don't think. It wasn't such a big deal, but that's the way American society (and the rest of the world) works and it pisses me off! But yeah, there are many other stories getting written that are very happy stories indeed. So I think you are wrong assuming most stories now are being written as "emo."
Sorry if I offended anyone, I just had to get that out of my system!

I wish they weren't! All my friends are obsessed with vampire and/or emo books but I'm just not interested. I think a lot of newish writers think that, after the sucess of twilight, a vampire story is the best way to get published right now. So all someone has to do is write a story as sucessful as twilight that isn't emo to prove thats wrong. At least, thats my theory

They're not... Emo is for emotional, unless its music then its short for emotive.
But thats the keyword: emotional. Feelings.
And that basically all books. They're full of emotions.
