I put myself in the characters shoes. What would they do in their free time? How would they react to certain situations? What's something they're afraid of that can be worked into a problem or conflict?

Music. Listen to every type known to man. There will be a song that sparks an idea. Hope it helps :)

Because I only write for pleasure and not profit I only write when I have an idea. However if I want to write and have trouble with writers block then I write a few lists of things for instance I write the name of a flower or country or any topic I think useful for each letter of the alphabet and usually find something then springs into my mind.

If all else fails, and I've done everything known to man to overcome a particularly hideous bout of writer's block - I've taken a break, I've browsed the internet, I've eaten, I've taken a bathroom break, anything - I usually just sit down and start writing. There's always something in the way of you writing your best, and a lot of times it's you. So when you figure out what's blocking you, the writing and the idea you had before you got blocked will come back.

I'm suffering from a little writer's block right now, and I feel your pain.

But seriously, if all else fails, just sit down and start writing. That's always the key.

If I'm stuck, I usually go find a newspaper or a magazine and flip through it. Something will usually jump out at me and spark an idea. :)

I usually write other things. I always have stories developing in my head. I take a bit of time to work on those until I can get an idea for my current story. Also, I talk to people (only those I'm really close with) about my story, and ask them what they think. Sometimes, great ideas come from others' thoughts about my stories :)

U put ur self in the character's shoes and find out what they would do... keep re-reading ur story and find out where he/she could learn a trate that might solve this problem... In the beginning of my book, my character could twist his arm in a perfect circle, and when he was trapped in this weird material, the crackling of his bone whispered the syllebles of the password to get out.... if u are insanely stuck in writers block and there's truly nothing u can do, just re-write what happened before..

I don't know that there is a definitive cure for writer's block. I think it really depends on the writer and indeed, I've found it depends on the situation itself. All of the suggestions so far are good and I've pretty much used all of them at some point. The key to overcoming writer's block is to know what's causing it.

At times when I've simply lacked inspiration I've often turned to music, but a good writer can find inspiration in any number of things. Maybe go for a walk, do some people watching, turn on the tv and channel surf or skim through a book. Hopefully something will strike a cord in you that you can run with.

Other times I've found that I've written myself into a hole, and the harder I try to dig my way out the deeper it gets. At times like that I find it best to do something to take my mind off it for a while. Finish that pesky History paper you have due. Head down to the gym and work up a sweat. Anything to distract. Then go back and reread it in its entirety. You may see a solution to the problem that wasn't apparent to you before.

Still other times I've found the best thing to do is write through it. Try to let the words come naturally. Don't force anything. You may simply be over-thinking it. Remember, if there is something that you're not completely satisfied with you can always go back and retouch it. The important thing is to get past the road block you've hit.

Often the best resources you might have are the people in your life. Whether it be one of your friends at home or a fellow author you met online. Or maybe a family member. Anyone you feel comfortable enough with to let read your work. My friend Rhianna used to use our English teacher as a sounding board for a novel she was working on outside of school. Get their opinions, bounce ideas of them. I personally feel self-conscious letting anyone read something that's incomplete and not perfect, but there have been times when a second opinion is exactly what I needed.

And lastly, be patient. Remember that even the most successful writers have no doubt struggled with writer's block at some point in their career. Hopefully in time you can overcome the obstacle and you'll be a better writer for it.
