I can't choose. Putting Lincoln, Dubya, and Reagan in the same pick really makes it impossible to say.

When I ask people for their favorite president, I always request that they leave out history's greatest presidents (Abraham Lincon, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc.), because we ALL love them.

Given this choice, though, I have three, and NOT in any order: George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Abraham Lincoln.

^ I would have split them up if I knew HOW. It really is difficult to choose, which is why I haven't picked. Somebody might know theirs though.

Cinders picked Calvin Coolidge:
Also, Lincoln and Grant were a different breed of Republican than Gilded Age Republicans, let alone post-1896 or modern Republicans. Ah, don't you love how the American party systems evolved?

I chose Coolidge simply because I was avoiding big names, and because one of my favorite historical anecdotes revolves around President Coolidge's notorious taciturnity.

Don't worry, I'm not gonna tell it.

... Oh, if you insist! Actually there are many versions of this, but I prefer the version that takes place at a baseball game. Coolidge sat in front of a pair of young politicians. One said to the other, "I bet you he'll say more than two words tonight." At the end of the game, Coolidge turned around and faced the young men before he looked at the one who had made the bet and said, "You lose."

True or not, the story does sum up his character rather nicely.

HuddyJoy0524 picked Ronald Reagan:
RR was a BAMF. He shares a lot of the same classic views that I do. I also like Teddy. His saying "Speak softly and carry a big stick," while often ridiculed, I find it to be true.

Eisenhower and Ford were also great guys.

ducky8abug4u picked Abraham Lincoln:
Abraham Lincoln is my favorite Republican president. Lincoln's political strategy may have been to create welfare subsidies for railroad and canal-building corporations (as well other agendas) but when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation, his pen all but encouraged the defection of thousands of slaves (to the North). Millions of slaves freed themselves with Lincoln's executive order and because of that, and that alone, he will always be my favorite Republican. Mind you, I have no illusions about his "true motives". I understand that he envisioned the consolidation of state services (and corporations) but I still appreciate the executive order he signed.

George Bush Sr. comes in at a close second. I liked Senior Bush because he referred to Ronald Reagan's policies as "voodoo economics." Before Bush Sr. became Reagan's vice president, he criticized Reagan's economic policies, which favored "reduced income and capital gains tax rates." Bush Sr. was a man ahead of his time in more ways than is appreciated or known. I admired the man! Still do!
